Rivian iconography seems to have 4 images for the HVAC vents:
  1. hot air / heating
  2. neutral air / blowing
  3. cold air / cooling
  4. no air / off
Why doesn't my third row show cooling (obviously the system is trying to cool the whole car)? Am I crazy, and the third row just doesn't have AC? Note: there are people sitting and seat-belted in each row.

It's just blowing cabin air.

It is by design. Read the manual.
It is not perfect. But better than nothing.

o_O that's where our dog crates will go... and no sunshade for the roof. I will be asking about this during our first mile test drive on Monday. Could actually be a deal breaker.

Pet mode does a decent job keeping the whole cabin cool in the R1S. Just make sure you've got the second row floor vents on cool and the third row fan on and it'll be fine when in motion.

@Paradigm_Shift It's absolutely NOT a problem, even in 108 degree Texas summer heat.

Since I took delivery in early March, before the software release that allows us to manually turn on the 3rd row vents (critical with the 3rd row folded), I initially kept a close eye on a bluetooth temperature sensor (the little blue square on the left wall of the cargo area in the pic below) I placed in the cargo area to monitor temps experienced by the dog. The dog remains completely comfortable back there at all times. In fact, if I turn the fan speed up too high, the dog's fur is actually quite cold when getting out of the vehicle so I rarely ever turn the fan speed up past 1 or maybe 2 (if the car has been parked in the sun and is hot or if we've been out walking in the heat and the dog is hot then I will crank it up for a few minutes after getting in). And even with no sunshade on the glass roof of the R1S, the metal roof of our dog crate never gets warm to the touch (it will obviously match the air temp inside the vehicle like every other surface if parked without the AC running).

awesome, thanks everyone! I'm not worried about it now that I know it's part of the design, I just did not know the third row is recirculating vents only (or whatever we want to call it).

I have a different complaint about these vents - I always have to go to the third row screen and turn them on manually every time after I turn on the AC. The car remembers my settings for all the other vents in the car, but not these.

Yes, I agree. I really wish that setting was sticky as the dog is back there more often than not. Also really annoying that those vents get turned off when Pet Mode gets disabled.

Completely agree, it’s moronic

The third row is on or off, no control for temp just 4 blower speeds as it uses the control from the front for the type of air being blown.

If you set the front to cool and turn on the third row blowers it blows cool air. We use this all of the time for our pups and it stays very cool back there for them.

Thank you for this info. Our third row will be folded 99% of the time as out dog crates will be there. Original config was 2-row until that was discontinued. Hopefully the control /memory issues can be solved by a software update
