Hi all,

I unfortunately have some rear bumper damage on the R1T as photographed. I was towing and the trailer hit the bumper. Both of the silver panels (especially passenger side) are damaged and the passenger side brake light cover is broken. Also the bracket that would hold the hitch receiver cover (which of course was not in place as I was towing) is damaged. I am not sure if those silver panels with brake light can be replaced independently or if this will require the entire rear bumper be replaced. My best guess is whole bumper. I can take the vehicle to the service center in about 4-5 weeks to get an estimate (I can't make it in the meantime due to other obligations), and I am just wondering what the ballpark will be for this repair. I have a $500 deductible, and though I am assuming the repair will be over that, I'm unsure the degree to which this type of repair would then affect my premiums. Obviously if the increase in premium is more than the difference between cost and deductible, I would not want to file a claim.

I have no claims in ~15 years and have a claim-free discount through Nationwide/Rivian insurance).

Thanks for any insights as this is brand new territory for me.

Can we get a shot from further back to see the whole bumper?

I’d fix that out of pocket. Not worth the insurance hit.

So minor I wouldn't even fix it... Things are bound to happen again... And again... And again.

Good news is it didn’t damage anything metal. I would see what the out of pocket would be before deciding but I’m guessing that will be the simpler solution depending on your specific insurance coverage and details.

Thanks. I’m obviously new here - is there a consensus about whether to take to a rivian service center vs Rivian certified independent shop when paying out of pocket?

I’m really not sure as I haven’t had to deal with it. That said, I can’t see why you couldn’t put in a ticket and upload the photos to see if they would quote you. As far as I can see there is no actual “body work” just plastic OEM part replacement. You can always refuse the work if you think it’s too much. That’s actually what I would do first now that I think about it.

With any other vehicle I’d buy the parts from the parts counter and try to fix myself. Probably worth it to get an estimate from the service center, might yield you a parts list. I know they have preferred repair shops, can probably get that info when you take it in for service appointment. If nothing else, see if they will sell you that lense to replace …

Trailer come off or just wrap against back of truck?

I gather service centres don’t do “collision“(don’t know of this would be considered collision repair), but if paying out of pocket, the service centre‘s rates are almost certainly higher than a body shop., so there’s that.

Your insurance won’t necessarily rise from one claim in 15 years. Apart from losing the No-claim discount which sounds scammy. The purpose of insurance is to use it when You need it.

maybe see what the cost is first and balance it against your deductible which I hope is at least $1000 if you never file claims.

You may not see an increase if you make a claim....however if it were me I would consider just replacing the broken light and letting the other damage go or if it's less than $1,500 paying out of pocket.

I would get a quote from Rivian on it then decide whether it’s worth fixing now or later or through insurance or not. At some point parts will hopefully be more readily available and you might be able to get it fixed for cheaper.

The only thing I would even be concerned with if you wait is if water was to get inside those lights and do other damage.

Did the the trailer jackknife, or how did that damage happen? The light damage appears to be only to the reflector surrounding the back-up light which appears to be intact.
