Electrify America to add North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector by 2025

Electrify America continues to support CCS-1 plug standard while adding the availability of the NACS connector

Reston, VA (June 29, 2023) – Electrify America announced today it will add the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector to Electrify America and Electrify Canada’s fast charging networks as part of the company’s commitment to broaden charging solutions for electric vehicle (EV) drivers today and in the future.

Electrify America will continue to provide the Combined Charging System (CCS-1) connector throughout its network as it transitions to also support automakers adding NACS charging ports. The company will work to offer a NACS connector option at existing and future charging stations by 2025 to make charging as convenient as possible for EV owners.

“Since our founding, we have focused on building an inclusive and open hyper-fast charging network to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles,” said Robert Barrosa, president and CEO of Electrify America. “We look forward to continuing to support industry-wide standards that increase vehicle interoperability and streamline public charging.”

In addition to working with The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) and SAE International, Electrify America is participating in the newly created National Charging Experience Consortium (ChargeX), which will focus on strengthening the national charging infrastructure and improving the EV ownership experience.

As e-mobility accelerates, Electrify America will continue to deliver what the customers need. The addition of the NACS connector continues Electrify America’s commitment to drive EV adoption forward and its focus on providing ultra-fast charging for all EVs. The fast-charging network has more than 850 charging stations with about 4,000 individual chargers in the United States and Canada. Electrify America and Electrify Canada stations feature chargers at 150 kilowatts (kW) and 350kW, some of the fastest charging speeds available today.

By opening up Electrify America’s fast charging network to the hundreds of thousands of current and future EV drivers, it will support the EV industry growth by providing more charging options. As the company’s inclusion of the NACS connector continues to evolve, Electrify America will share further updates on its progress, along with current and future station update plans over the coming months.

That is about 18 months too late for them to remain relevant. No one who owns any of the NACS or NACS adapter vehicles (Ford, GM, Rivian, Polestar, Volvo, etc.) will still be using EA by 2025. The day your adapter arrives the EA membership will be cancelled. After a year of access to the Supercharger network, EA will be the forgotten network that never worked well and could not get its act together.

That's funny. I see Tesla's charging on EA all the time even with SC slots available nearby (sometimes in the same parking lot).

I for one will use the most economical charger that delivers a reasonable charging speed.

Texas bob, i have 3 EA stations within 50 miles of me and 0 Tesla's within 60 miles. EA is $0.36 cents and Teslas are $0.50. Would you recommend i drive farther and spend more?

Sound economic sense…. But only if the EA charger is working!

Right now EA is just a monetary distribution system for a large government fine levied for VW wrongdoing. Yet to be seen if they intend to be a competent network operator, or will eventually sell the assets to someone who is.

I am not recommending you do anything, I am saying that EA is a massively inferior network and if they do not get their NACS together long, long before 2025, they will be dead in the water.

Though I suppose I will recommend one thing: you generally should not charge at any public chargers within 60 miles of your home for $0.36 kw (much less 60 cents!) when you can charge at home for a small fraction of that cost.

If only I had experience on my own using EA and was able to form my own opinion.

In 32,000 miles in 15 months i have had lots of trips that on my way home i have had to charge up to make it home? Think a 300-400 mile trip? Are you mansplaining a situation that you didn't put 1 second of thought into?

Oh great. Now they’ll have a NACS connector on unreliable equipment. Haha
But it's NACS so it has to be better. Look at how easily I can plug this broken charger into my vehicle.

The better bet that non fanboys of either equipment will say is what ever option is reliable, cheapest and available is the one that will be used. People drive out of their way to save $0.05 a gallon. Gas stations have been doing that for years. I don't know many people who drive to a gas station that is more money if all other things are equal.

Having a statement that reads " No one who owns any of the NACS or NACS adapter vehicles (Ford, GM, Rivian, Polestar, Volvo, etc.) will still be using EA by 2025. " Better also go buy a lottery ticket, invest in whatever animal NFT is going to be big in 2025.

What the future holds for charging infrastructure is truly unknown and most or all of us being fans of what EV's can do should all just hope that we have many options to choose from with technology getting better and better every day. Monopolies do not lead to innovation.
