I never understood why you would want a cover at all for a pickup truck. I know so many people that buy pickup trucks and they count the seconds to get a cover or cap or similar on the back. that limits what you can put in the bed. Then I see people driving down the road with giant bed covers tied half way down over something they are hauling. Seems like the worst of both worlds, but I'm not really a pickup truck guy.

Glad all the R1T people will be getting these though, it seems like the number 1 compliant on a lot of social media.

Not having a tonneau or cap limits what you can put (or keep) in the bed even more, because the back of your pickup becomes a convenience store for thieves.

Gotta say, I'm pretty bummed that the manual doesn't push into the cavity where the powered goes. It's just wasted space now.

The power one looks to be a soft material. Probably makes more sense, but not as secure as original. The manual looks to be plastic panels and for $1,800, I'll stick with the aftermarket option I picked. Hope it gives everyone something they want. I'm wondering if those who don't have a power one now will have the option to add it later.

Looks like the power is now a soft rollup deal. Don't see any solid panels in the video.

Given the lengthy development cycle I was quietly hoping they would surprise us with a retracting manual tonneau. The 4-piece design looks nice, but it sure is not obvious why it took so long.

I agree. It should not have taken this long to come up with panels that slide into a slot. I still believe this is not a very functional solution like a folding or rolling bed cover.

I'm betting they forced people buying to pick either no tonneau or manual once they came out and said there was an issue because they didn't want to have to retrofit all of those orders once a new powered solution came out. This way they are only on the hook to warranty and replace those powered covers that were shipped prior to them announcing the issue.

Oh I guess, we'll never see the kitchen so that's a non-issue...

That's what I was wondering about. Using up space in the cargo tunnel (substantial space from the looks of it) seems less than ideal.

So what will my options be? I got mine in 12/22. I had ordered a powered, but then I selected no tonneau in the gear shop earlier than initial delivery window. My truck arrived with no tonneau but it does have the power button on the side rail, and it has the compartment into which the powered would retract. So I wonder if it would be possible to add the powered? I bet it won't be
I also just don't like the idea of dealing with 4 pieces. I would much prefer a manual retracting tonneau like on the Santa Cruz.

That is interesting that it came with the buttons. Same as you, I had the powered on my reservation and it came off when they removed it (I added the manual to the order). I also got mine in 12/22 with no buttons. What was your manufacture date? Mine was 11/22?

Both look AWESOME. Part of me is disappointed I didn't get the powered tonneau, which I originally ordered, but switched to the manual to take delivery. However, after seeing the manual cover and how easy it will be to use I think that will do just fine for my needs.

I'm sure nobody knows, but hoping it's somewhat weather/water proof!

I don't think that is the case. From the Rivian Support page:

What will change about the powered tonneau cover design?
The updated design addresses subcomponent design issues and improves the tonneau cover's robustness against manufacturing build variations. The look and function of the new design is the same.

Can't really tell from the video though.

The new cover is quiet in this video, but this is also a factory, and the engineer and RJ are both mic'd up where the cover is not, so I will take that with a grain of salt.

Mine is still popping and creaking along, but usually opening or closing without issue. I have just been using as needed knowing it will eventually get replaced. I do still lube the tracks and the slats every month or so though.

My auto tonneau cover is still working. Perhaps it's just a matter of time but at this point I don't really have cause for complaint. And I certainly don't want to replace it with a manual design as shown. Loss of convenience would be significant.

I agree - there are so many home brew solutions that look like that or can replicate it, with no where near the $1800 price tag! Not an elegant solution in my opinion if you have to take up space in the tunnel - that defeats the whole purpose of it.

I made one for much much much less than that in the meantime and works perfectly... as a mater of fact, can make one out of aluminum locking panels that looks exactly like that for much less... Not very impressed for a 100k truck. I'll wait to see what the pricing is for the power version.

For $800 (at least at pre-March prices) I am more than happy to pay that for the manual version that Rivian engineered. That said, I had NO IDEA they were charging $1,800 now - that seems pretty darn steep. In fact, pretty sure that was the cost for the powered version when I ordered. Wow.
