FWIW, as far as I'm concerned, Rivian should up the Destination Fee by another $1500 and make all paint colors except RB and CY be "free" selections and RB and CY cost just $100k.
Can we just call it an add-on profit fee then?

In this case, I don't care what they call it as long as it isn't included in their MSRP.

Last time I shipped a vehicle it was $1200, and that was 5 yrs ago. Not sure where you guys are getting profit … probably costing them that for shipping 7500lb trucks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s supposed to be an average. Not all their vehicles are sent coast to coast. In fact some are picked up with no shipping at all. Considering the economy of scale, grouping multiples via train/truck, I’m guessing it’s a negotiated national rate somewhere south of what the consumer is paying.

Unregulated junk fees that lack transparency. Maybe the transportation fee is legit…how would we know? It’s also wildly different between manufacturers.

(satire)

Not unlike unregulated shrinkflation at your local grocer. It’s the wild west of product sizing.

Where is the weights and measures department when they’re not measuring torque wrenches and gallons pumped?
The transportation/destination charge is regulated by the government, in the sense that everyone must pay the same amount for a particular vehicle regardless of location. The actual amount is up to the manufacturer. So yes, by goverment regulation, if you pick up your vehicle at the factory, you are subsidizing someone in Alaska where the actual shipping cost might be $2500 even though they paid $1800.

"The way in which the destination charge is calculated (that equalization thing mentioned above) is government mandated as is the need to make it an individual line item on the Monroney sheet – that window sticker with the MSRP and all the other options fees broken out."

Completely agree the folks doing factory deliveries are getting screwed, one of the reasons I didn’t do that.

We always wanted to take Factory Delivery of our R1T regardless of the fact that we would still have to pay the standard destination charge. We wanted to do this for several reasons.

1. The trip to Normal is an adventure for us. We brought our Airstream and spent over a week touring the towns in Central Illinois.

2. We got to see the Factory and take a one on one factory tour.

3. We took delivery of our dear Opal in the Factory Delivery Center. Two very competent Rivian employees spent two hours with us going over every aspect of the vehicle. The Delivery Center itself is a very nice indoor facility with an R1T chassis on display. When we arrived at the Delivery Center, Opal was staged in a showroom setting all cleaned up and beaming. After the instructional session, one of the delivery employees then went with SuEllyn on a demonstration drive in the area.

4. Probably the most important reason that we wanted to take Factory Delivery is that Opal did not have to undergo the rigors of train/truck travel. We believe that this cross country delivery travel beats the vehicle up to a certain extent.
