Does the App have to stay running to use phone as key?

Yes, whether using it as PAAK or not. It communicates with your R1T/R1S on a frequent interval on LE Bluetooth power.

On Android you let it run in the background (you'll see a notification for Rivian Phone Key) but, no, you don't need the app open in the foreground.

This isn't true. You don't need the app actively open for either, and definitely don't need the app open if you aren't even using PaaK.

So...I've been closing the app on my iPhone (swiping the app up for force it closed and get the app notification that my key won't work) and it seems to stop the key working for awhile...order an hour or two. But then I can get close to the truck never having opened the app and the doors will still unlock because bluetooth is still connected to the truck's devices. Turning off bluetooth isn't something I'm willing to do on my phone because I frequently use BT earbuds and an Apple Watch.
