It's very sad to see Lucid struggle as much as they have. It's not surprising though. Their price point is too high and product design is underwhelming. It's not a bad looking car but when sedans are dying and people are buying CUVs by the boat load, why focus on the declining market? I think if they had made the car look more like a Taycan/E-Tron, they might have sold better. Their Gravity SUV looks promising but they need to stay afloat until that releases. Unless the Saudi's bail them out, they look to be in big trouble.

Funny they call Rivian a Tesla rival when in reality Lucid is more of a direct competitor. It was started by the man responsible for the Model S, started with a sedan and the next vehicle planned is an SUV designed for the road. ??

On the surface this is not unusual. Both American companies, new auto companies and solely BEV vehicles. Operate in different segments for now (will change when R2 comes out).

Not sure the R2 series will be direct Tesla competitors either.

I have not seen any details but I would expect them to be smaller simpler versions of the R1S and R1T still focused on the adventure theme with fewer frills.

Rivian seems pretty focused on the market they are after and the Tesla Model 3/Y does not really fall into that column.

I guess I typically just have a finer set of criteria when I shop for a vehicle.

I kinda see Rivian sticking more to the Subaru/Jeep type market with the R2 than going after Tesla, personally.

Rivian is a Landrover rival. Tesla is not in this adventure market at all. Tesla's pickup truck is going to be focused (mark my words) on no-frills maximum spec for the price. Rivian is poised to clobber LandRover and be the new premier adventure vehicle brand.

Oh totally, the majority of that segment would qualify. I live in Chicago and I see wranglers and subarus all over the place. I bet 99.5%+ have never even hit a dirt road, and a lot of those wranglers have a lot of aftermarket work done on them. Thats the thing though, its such a potentially valuable market if you can convince people that Rivian is that kind of brand.

I have always see the R1S as the EV successor to the Land Cruiser. It's not as quirky as Subaru and not as blue collar as the Jeep. I can see why it could be seen as a Defender alternative but when I look at the R1S I see more Land Cruiser FJ60 vibes. I am a Toyota fanboi so maybe it's my way of justifying the R1S.
