I took my R1T out for a meandering day. Here's how it went:
Where:
Mountain roads around the Bay Area, including one where the pavement gets very bad, and eventually ends, with a seasonal gate.
The good:
This truck is an absolute dream. On windy roads with good pavement, Sport mode makes for a really fun time leaning into corners. The torque vectoring is really something.
When the pavement got really bad, Rally mode came to the rescue. It's the unsung hero of the R1: It loosens up the roll stability, keeps the truck up high, and really lets the wheels use your travel as you're going over potholes, missing pavement hunks, etc. But the best part is it remaps the throttle. Hear me out: It dulls your inputs juuuust the right amount so as you're bouncing around from flying down a rutted out trail that you won't introduce more instability into the vehicle. At the same time, Rally mode throttle respects the send: A quick stab of the go pedal is still met with a really awesome power surge, which makes ripping the back end loose insanely easy. It's such a fun mode, I recommend it for any bad pavement areas, or dirt road fun.
I got to rip around a few times in Drift mode in a wet dirt lot, but the sight of my ruts made me cut that out. Maybe somewhere people don't have to park, and not in the wet. It sure does rip the rear end of the truck around when you give the send-it pedal a nice stomp.
Not so awesome
My alignment is off. I need to file a service ticket to get it looked at.
There's a silly-large GPS bounce that occurs whenever the vehicle stops. It causes the nav to reroute, which if audio for navigation is on, means it blabbers at you at every intersection. I'll get this looked at, at the same time as the alignment.
Otherwise, this truck is a dream, and I can't wait to get more dirt on it.
