I use android and when someone asks, I tell them that PAAK is crap and rest of car is mostly good. Worse still, there is no passive key, like my 14 year old car.

They don't ask what phone I have. If Rivian wanted to support only IOS, they should have. Putting out half assed implementation isn't going to help them or the customers.
If it makes you feel any better, the iOS version doesn't work well for me, either.

Weird, I haven’t had a single problem with my 14 pro paak
I have the same phone. What I find is that the car will not unlock unless I actively pick the phone out of my pocket and press a button. Odd, right? It’s like the phone can’t stay out of deep sleep.

That’s really weird! I don’t think iOS gives an option to prevent deep sleep by application (like what android does) so as long as the app is left open it technically shouldn’t be sleeping. My app settings are pretty normal, location set to always, everything else enabled.

I had a conversation with a CS representative about how crappy the PAAK is for Androids and he said (I'm paraphrasing) that they had put much less time into the Android app than the Apple app.

I think it was something to the tune of "I've noticed a lot of customers lately with Android PAAK issues. I think our resources have become misaligned" ... or something similar.

Rivian clearly thinks rich people (their customer base) only use iPhones, so why should they bother with Android functionality?
Another possible consideration is that developing software for android is a massive PITA compared to iOS. The fragmentation of the Android ecosystem is a problem from both a hardware and software point of view.

I don't get why Rivian can't have direct install of apps. Whether it be andoird, apple, amazon or even freaking microsoft. No need to overlay AA or CP; just allow direct access.

I don't think anyone allows direct access.

Tesla is the closest, but they still curate their app marketplace.

Interestingly this PAAK issue for Android was a thing for me with my Tesla. When I first got my 3, I had an Android phone and PAAK was awful. After about two years, I switched to an iPhone and all of a sudden PAAK was flawless. So it may be more of an Android thing than a Rivian thing here

I had Carplay in a Tundra, and the transition back and forth between the Toyota system and Carplay was very clunky. I hope Rivian does a better job with it. Frankly, I'd settle for better nav and text message handling.

I hope this wasn't a CS agent speaking out of turn! FWIW: on my first-mile drive, I peppered my ride-along with all sorts of questions (tire size, perceived handling), including the CarPlay one. she shot down CP pretty emphatically, but I'm also aware engineers—like icebergs—can be moved given the right conditions. (that's a compliment, my dear Devs on this thread!) in all honesty, seeing the beautiful complexity of the screens I wondered to myself if Rivian would even be able to integrate CP or AA. I remain hopeful after reading this anecdote. thanks OP!

Engineers are not the blocker on this issue. This is 100% a business decision being made at the top.

From Apple or Android business perspective, direct install is problematic for a lot of reasons. It's obvious that Apple will only allow IOS on their hardware. Beyond that, there's no standard screen resolution and ratio for vehicle displays, creating various visualization and UI/UX issues which people will slam as a bug, when it really is not. Also, Apple for certain, and I image Android as well, don't want the liability of someone installing Sling, Netflix, games, etc. on the primary driver display and run the risk of huge lawsuits by enabling driver distraction. Apple states this (among many other conditions) for Carplay app entitlement.
