Speaking as someone who has probably lost many tables to people who are better looking than me :giggle: , I am the first to admit that Rivian’s communications need to be much better. That being said, we need to remember the earliest orders came before the pandemic which absolutely wrecked the global supply chain for all kinds of things. So it is possible Rivian started this process fully intending to deliver in sequential order and were forced to adjust and make whatever they had parts for at the time.

They did actually communicate this to us each time they explained they were having ”supply chain issues”, although not explicitly saying what could and could not be built at the time of those communications. And I do understand why they would not be that specific. If they say ”we can’t get silver paint right now” all that would accomplish is a bunch of people switch their orders to other colors. Then they might have a shortage of one of those other colors or something else they weren’t expecting. It’s a shell game.

Also, it’s worth pointing out that no other manufacturers are communicating any better than Rivian is. Obviously that is a very low bar, but we seem to have built them up into something more than they actually are, which is a brand new manufacturer who has made plenty of rookie mistakes and will make many more. it’s fair to hold them accountable for those mistakes.

Speaking only for myself, I never actually expected Rivian would make my truck in the exact order it was placed - especially since I placed mine in 2021, well into the pandemic and it’s well known effect on parts/ supplies. Others are obviously free to feel differently about that. I understand why people are frustrated about seeing others jump in front of them - I guess I just prefer to understand what it is I am actually frustrated about.
This is very accurate. I would also add that this isn't a "custom" vehicle that they are making 10s or 100s of where they can keep you abreast of the progress of your particular vehicle. Rivian is trying to scale this up to make tens of thousands and while the company might try and make us feel unique/special with their marketing (to a degree) we need to remember that we are just a number on a future order list. Would I love communication or more detailed updates on delays or progress? Sure. But I can't honestly expect that from a major manufacturing company. Otherwise I am setting myself up to be constantly frustrated, no matter what information they release.

100% agree with you OP, if you look at the configurator page they now state if you make changes in their new terms and conditions now they state that they do not have to offer you the original price and they will send your reservation to the end of the line. I have not done any of that yet my reservation was 1H23, then processing, then 2H24 which is nuts. Thankfully I have a Model X since 2019 and it's been wonderful. Rivian on the other hand has been over promise & under deliver since day 1.

I think Rivian is limiting the amount of deliveries per service center. Lots of the early service centers are at capacity so that they are pushing the new vehicles to areas with new service centers going in. My area has a new service center that's going in that won't be active until either late this year or early next, so my other deliveries got pushed back because of that. It sucks, but so does the turn-around time on service right now.
Was going to suggest the same. Bellevue SC seems quite overwhelmed by the demand based on reports here.

This post pains me a lot to write, but...

I got my R1S reservation in December '21, and was told then to expect a 2nd half - 23 delivery. Then the next iteration of delivery schedules come out in October (I believe), and it slips to first half of '24. Then, last months delivery schedule announcement pushes it out to 2nd half of 24, of which I now expect to be November- December of 24, at the earliest.

On top of my anticipated three year wait, I see that many new reservation holders have jumped the line, in Rivian's attempt to generate higher revenue per vehicle. I would love to have a Rivian, and I love the looks of them as I see them driving down the road. But, you know, life moves on, and I have found better things to do with my money, and I agreed with my wife that maybe we should forego the Rivian in favor of those things.

So I am not going to take the Rivian. I am really ticked off at Rivian because of this. IMO, these pushbacks have been Riv's way of saying to us pre-price increase orders "Yes, you can have your Rivian, but F-You, you'll get it when we want you to get it, and only after everyone else gets theirs." I feel part of their motivation is to push these out as long as possible to force us either to cancel, or ship only when it is convenient for them.

So I am not going to cancel my order. Instead, sometime after I get my 8-steps notification, and only before I absolutely have to pay for the Rivian, will I cancel. This is my F-You back to them. I know it's minor, I know they don't really care and will just move my reservation to the next one in line but it's the only little thing I can do. After all, if I cancel now, then RJ, Sandy, and others can just point to my cancellation as evidence that pushing deliveries out for us is working. I am not going to give them that little bit of satisfaction.
If you're not cancelling your order, then you're not serious about not taking delivery.

Just sayin.

I think the BIGGEST mistake that Rivian made is over promised on October 2022 update. It seemed like they grouped majority of folks in the 2nd half of 2023 ( including myself which is 9/19 pre order). When the Jan 2023 update came, they realized that it is impossible , so they have to move a bunch of 2020 and 2021 pre orders to 1st and 2nd half of 2024, respectively.

Other than a random Reddit post I don't know anyone who got their Rivian (other than famous Vlogger or 2) who paid the higher price before us pre-order holders. With a December 2021 preorder you should not be expecting it anytime soon. My Nov-2020 order was just delivered. There are plenty of people in front of you, and honestly if you cancel at the last minute, plenty of people behind you.

Sorry but this complaint and whining that is happening is annoying. You didn't place your order in 2019 but are still waiting, you didn't get a VIN but are still waiting. You just don't want to wait, good cancel, trust me Rivian won't care because someone else will gladly take your vehicle. Go order a BMW (1 year wait) or a Benz (good luck), maybe try and find a Kia at sticker price without the 10k market (not going to happen).

Yeah their strategy to over promise and under delivery is very consistent lol. But their numbers and estimated delivery doesn't seem to make sense. They had about 71K orders as of december 15th 2021. With 25K produced at the end of 2022, they should be able to get through the rest of the preorders by the end of 2023 even including producing some of the Amazon EDV. Unless people's order are in state with no SC, I don't see how Rivian can put their estimates beyond 2024. Rivian should do a last QC check on vehicles with no SC to ensure they don't come back

Famous vloggers who paid the higher price? You mean the Cut-the-Line Kyles who didn't have a reservation and purchased an LE from the shop with pre-March 1 pricing well after March 1?

Just checking for a friend...

Well..I just made my reservation for a R1S on January 23rd, 2023 - Sounds like I won't be seeing mine until 2025+. I will be doing Dual Motor/Standard Pack though which may make it sooner.

Oof..

You are not owed a car and purposely attempting to "harm them" just makes you look petty.

(especially since it will accomplish exactly nothing)

Bellevue SC is slammed currently, I would not be surprised if Rivian is delaying deliveries in the Washington area until they can either build out more capacity in the existing SC or bring the other two (one for EDVs and a second consumer SC) Seattle area SCs online.

The Portland, OR SC is also not expected to be online till August, but a second temporary SC was recently brought online here to help eliminate the need for Oregon R1s to be sent up to Bellevue for service.

My R1S delivery was pushed to Q4 of this year, and I fully expect that the Portland SC not opening till late Q3 is part of that delay.

If you also accouting for the dual motors orders that supposed to be delivery this year, which mean they will have to push the quad motor to 2024 because of profit margin to keep them alive.

I've always surprised people wait years for a vehicle... It's just a vehicle after all.
Just get something else for now, in a few years see if you're still interested in Rivian... Maybe, maybe not.
