I have the 22" R5 Hakkas installed on my R1T's OEM wheels. So far am very happy with them.

I'm curious why you would go with the studded Hakkas in Seattle. It's my understanding that your roads are mostly wet rather than hard packed snow/ice in the winter. The R5 or LT3 may work better in predominately wet road conditions.

An excellent question. Mostly for skiing and road trips up to Northern BC. Can you provide a bit more color on your experience with them? Road noise, grip etc. Thank you!

I have the 20's, not the 22" Nokian LT3 installed on my R1T here in Denver. Night and day difference with vehicle in snow since changing tires. Great winter tire, Denver service center says quite a few people installing on Rivian's here in CO

Echo what @faastwheels said. Are you sure you want studded tires if you live in the Seattle area? I am not an expert by any means, but my sense is a true winter non-studded tire on a Rivian is going to be a winter beast in all but ice/nordic conditions...

That said, the studded ones + Rivian might be the ultimate winter road machine if you really need it...

Anyone out there install the Nokian HAKKAPELIITTA 10 SUV winter tires on their R1S? If so I'd be keen to hear from you on what you think. I have an appointment to get these installed on Wednesday.

We've had just one storm (12-30" in the 3-county area) since I had the R5s installed but they are proving to be vastly better than the 22" road tires - which was no surprise. I drove in snow a few times with the OEM 22s and found them to be very poor on hard pack snow/slush and ice that was prevalent then. Straight line acceleration was fairly good, albeit thanks to Rivian's drive systems. Turning, braking, hard regen were all marginal and resulted in sliding.

With the Hakkapeliitta R5s all aspects of winter driving have improved dramatically with steering being the most noticeable. Much better grip on the front end. We've had mostly above freezing temps since that storm week, so the roads are just occasionally wet now. Traction on wet seems a bit better than the stock tires. Road noise appears to be somewhat higher (as is always the case with snow tires), but the ride quality of the Hakkas seems a little softer.

My wife and I both got new vehicles in 2022 so both got new snow tires as well. Our last sets were Blizzaks (SRX AWD) and X-Ice (GMC 4WD Canyon). Her new car (Corsair AWD Hybrid) has new Blizzaks and I have the Hakkas on the R1T. I have used various brands (Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear, Cooper, Vredestein) of snow tires over several decades, but this is my first set of Nokians. With just a few miles on the Hakkas it's kind of difficult to compare, but so far I think they are fairly comparable to previous sets.

With the weight of the truck, I can't help but wonder about tire life. But that's a post for next year...

If it was me in your situation, I would think twice about going with studs. If 70-80% or more of your winter driving is going to be on maintained roads (i.e. mostly cleared, dry or wet pavement) I would opt for a non-studded snow tire. I have not had studded tires for over 30 years as they are not legal here in MI and were also not legal when I lived in CT or MD. I can't think of but a handful of times over that span where I wished I had had them - including many trips up mountain roads to ski in WV, PA and VT in fairly bad road conditions. Keep in mind a studded tire will generate a lot more road noise and may have less grip on pavement than a non-studded snow tire in some conditions.

Good luck with whichever option you choose. The R1 platform makes for a great winter vehicle with the proper rubber under it!

First off thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed review. There isn't a ton of information available on these types of tires on Rivian's so I truly appreciate it! Secondly I agree with most if not all of your observations/recommendations. I grew up about an hour's drive from Alaska so spent a good chunk of my life driving in icy/snowy conditions and think your assessment is spot on. I'd probably settle for the studless versions to be honest but these tires seem to be unobtanium at the moment. Calling around to different Nokian dealers yielded lots of chuckles and the typical comment was 'we may have those in a 6 months' etc. I did manage to find the studded version (don't ask me how as it is a long story) so I'll probably go with those as having a winter tire is better than none for what I need. Also can't visit Northern BC without a winter tire sadly. Thanks again for the writeup!

I fully understand the availability issue. I waited too long to look for snow tires since I was hoping for Rivian to offer the 20" wheels without the AT tires for my winter setup. When I took delivery in March, I was hoping for several wheel options by Fall - but there are not many options for the truck so far, and I understand there is a shortage of TPMS sensors also. After an early snowfall convinced me that snowies were a must for my R1T, I quickly learned that none of the local tire stores could source anything in a 22 to mount on my OEM wheels. I happened to stumble upon the R5s at SimpleTire.com in early November and snagged those - and felt very lucky that I could find anything so late into the season.

I have had 3 different tire outfits try to find the Hakka's in 22's OEM size and they basically told me not going to happen this year, until their US plant gets up and running, but they won't make any more winter tires this season. Not till late summer.

So I am getting Michelin X-Ice 3's installed as I am typing this. They are a bargain compared to the Nokians, about $257 at TireRack and you can get places to match that price. Discount (Americas) Tire bought TireRack a few months ago, so they will give you that price no questions asked.

Hi all,
Trying to figure out the right (+ available) option for 22" snow tires for my R1S w/ max pack.

The vehicle came with the following Pirrelis: HL 275/50/R22 116H

I'm coming up short on understanding the "HL" designation, and whether it is really important or not when looking for a snow tire equivalent.

Nokian lists both a HL and non-HL variant at this page:
https://www.nokiantires.com/snow-winter-tires/nokian-tyres-hakkapeliitta-r5-suv/

However, I've not been able to find a Nokian part number for the HL variant so I am not sure it really exists.

I have also heard great feedback on the Blizzak DM V2. Bridgestone's website says it is compatible with the Rivian R1S, but my local tire shop's website says it is not compatible. Again no HL designation on that tire as well.

I also found a Michelin X-Ice Snow 275/50R22 115H that seems to be in stock locally, but again no HL designation.

Any advice would be appreciated.
