So the past suppose to be 12 hour road trip (budgeted roughly 2 hours for charging in there) from Cincinnati to NYC today ended up being a 19 hour trip.

The biggest thing I wish I had known before I left was how to do the reset on the Rivian. I heard all about it on these forums but never investigated how to do it. The reason being is because I hopped around to three different EA charging locations and my R1S would not connect to them. Cars before me and cars after me all connected fine. An R1T connected fine and I couldn't - That's when I made a call to rivian customer service.

Service tech told me that I basically tripped the security feature on the rivian on one of the bad EA chargers and it wasn't going to let me plug anything else in. He told me how to do a reset (far left steering wheel button + hazard lights at same time and hold). And wahla I could charge again.

At this point I had 1 mile on my R1S and this guy became my hero. He said he really wished Rivian would push out this info because he knew exactly the issue before I even explained anything more. It's like he has had this call 1000 times.

Hope this saves another pour soul some hours at an L2 charger because they couldn't get their R1 to connect.

Over Thanksgiving the Rivian Service team was absolutely flooded with these calls, all EA chargers.

I had since sensor issues (completely unrelated to charging) I had called in about and they were relieved I wasnt stuck at an EA charger. I just needed a hard reset and I was good.

Yeah, and unfortunately these are the brand new EA chargers that are having these problems. It is affecting not only Rivians. Somehow the idiotic EA chargers are sending MORE power to the vehicle than the vehicle is requesting, and at some point, protection circuitry shuts it all down.

Hopefully EA gets a clue and updates their chargers SOON.

It's already in your user manual.
Ahh yes - my thinking was clouded to think of this with a 4 year old crying in the back lol. I needed a 911 and rivian service delivered :p

Sure but that doesn't tell you that this is what you need to do to engage with an irritated EA charger. I know how to do a reset but it would probably have never occurred to do one when an EA charger keeps kicking me off. This is the info that needs to be disseminated.

You're asking a lot!!!

EA has been 100% completely clueless from day 1 and continue to be that way to this day no matter what the EA Fanbois here insist. Somehow they will claim it's Rivian's fault... :crying:

Exactly. At the point of this I wasn't sure what the issue was period or thought to do reset having never done one before. I didn't know where to start and kinda freaking out because I couldn't go anywhere else with 1 mile. I just wanted to put all this out there to hopefully spare someone else.

]It's amazing how many people don't read their car manuals.

I read the R1T manual pdf before I ever picked up my truck. There was no way I was picking it up without knowing how to reset the car and the all important tow procedures knowing that any roadside assistance company would likely have no idea how to tow a quad motor EV properly.

I recommend to every new owner to print a PDF of the tow guide and keep it in your truck:

it's software - if the Rivian rep can diagnose this, then so can the software in the car... Another one for the punch list.

Windows vs Apple = EA vs Tesla

it is hard to make your equipment work with everyone. I haven't looked but I would be interested to know what testing is done by EA and the manufacturer. I have not seen a 'Designed to work with EA chargers' program that would indicate the kind of solution needed...

Out of Spec Motoring has talked a lot about this issue with EA. As a matter of fact, he was on a road trip and encountered this issue a few times. Short story, Rivian engineers were able to review logs from the truck that verifies that its an EA issue. I'm not sure what software changes you'd make with the Rivian since its doing exactly whats its suppose to do when an annomily happens from a charger.

Having access to Teslas Superchargers can't come fast enough since everything else is junk and unreliable. Our R1T probably won't see long road trips until these issues are ironed out.
