Opinion: The truck needs to switch to front wheel drive automatically on the highway.

I'd take the choice for sure. But the impact is pretty big, especially with what they can claim is their EPA range. Lets be cheap and call it a 15% increase in range. In MA electricity is ~28 cents a kw delivered. If I drive 10k miles that's 5k KWh in all purpose mode, $1400. Puts me at $210 saved in a year using front wheel drive on the highway like the most advanced electric car company the world has seen (I am no fanboy, its just the truth).

To me owning an electric car is entirely about getting as much range as I possibly can without changing my driving style. If others feel differently, then keep her in all purpose. No skin off my back.
Now calculate the extra wear on the tires and subtract that yearly cost, which I'd almost guarantee is more than 210$.

EDIT: Also, you want this automatically to apply to us all. My electricity is like 95% green and costs .10$/kwh. So your 210 is 70$ for me. Given we're both driving 100k vehicles, 70$ isn't worth the time I've spent in this thread (though it was fun so I'll live with it).

But that is not what your original post stated…… you wanted automatic, software-controlled changes in the performance of the truck. For all

Also, $210 a year? That’s pretty silly ?

Yep, not a ton of dough but there is efficiency to be gained in cost, time, and effective range. Seems silly to just have it suck juice because it can with no benefit.

I’m not buying a 835hp truck to drive it neutered. If I wanted an efficient vehicle I would’ve bought something else. If people want to engage conserve mode, that’s their choice, but I doubt I would use it much, probably only if I didn’t plan my charging stops out properly, or too much range between them. I’m baffled by the comments about driving in conserve just to save money, considering the amount these trucks cost. If I wanted efficient or cost effective there are a lot of other options out there that are fine that cost about half as much.

Sorry, too bad. We all must give up our power and traction so the OP can save 200 bucks a year. He can't be bothered to press the conserve button himself. That's just how it's gonna be.

I drive everything I own like a neutered poodle on the highway. Looks like I'm in the minority here but I don't see a whole lot of benefit to having all motors readily accessible for the one time a month I stomp it on the highway at the cost of 50 less miles per charge. The implementation would need a smooth transition from front to all wheel, though.

You don't use any of the above in typical highway driving, I promise.

Then you're ignoring everyone in this thread who has provided plenty of good reasons to still want to drive in AP and have all 4 motors engaged.

I don't give two shits if they make this an option that can be toggled on, but your concept that we all want this or we should all want this so it should be automatic is inane.

If the clutch system was designed to be used under power, I'd have no problem with it being automatic and not user configurable. It's obviously not though. And it's rare for me to not stomp on the throttle on a drive. zoom

Clearly I'm missing something here. I stomp it to get on the highway once a month or so, most of the time I'll use 50-75% throttle to get up to speed at a still silly rate. Do you just drive up and down the highway stomping it and slamming on the brake? Is that how everyone on the rivian forums drives? I guess I should have gone to get-into-your-lane-and-go-with-the-flow-of-traffic-like-a normal-human-being-forums.com.

Here’s what typical highway driving is for me half the year. Gimme all the traction.

The highway I'm on the most has several speed limit changes between 55 and 70, and a stop light right before the limit changes back up to 70 mph. Sure, they aren't all like that, but this one is. Other freeways have pretty short onramps in places and it's really amazing to be able to hit the speed limit in only a couple hundred feet. For long distance driving, it's definitely a different situation than how I drive every day.
