that sounds roughly correct.

48A @ 240V = 11.5KW. ~ 10% loss on the conversion from AC to DC gives you around 10KW usable.

miles / hour value will vary depending on too many factors to make it a reasonable metric for comparison (driving habits, driving mode, tires, etc).

I’ve never seen 24.9 on mine. Usually 22ish.

But @Craigins said something important, the app is translating the power delivery and saying “for your driving, it’s delivering 2X.X miles/hr”.
Makes more sense now

my Rivian app usually says 24.9mph.

Also could be voltage loss from distance to main panel? Using 6 awg run over 140 ft to detached garage. With portable charger I only get 13.7 vs advertised “up to 16”.

Does the Rivian charger need to be connected to wifi to work? or can it be just a "dumb" charger that just plugs in and delivers electrons to the vehicle according to the vehicle charging control s/w+electronics. Thanks in advance for feedback.

You have to connect it to WiFi during initial setup, but one setup it works fine without WiFi.

You do not have to connect to wifi. During install mine could never find my wifi, but works fine. Only connection made was Bluetooth to my phone (which took several tries).

So a couple thoughts I'll add:

  • I can measure the throughput on my Chargepoint home station and for me it's a) never the full 11.5kw it theoretically should be, avg is probably about 11.2kw and b) never exactly the same, but generally within 0.1kw of the mean. So if you can, try to figure out what's coming through the cable to start with.
  • The truck and app round to the nearest kw, which for me is rounding up to 11kw from something like 10.5kw or maybe little more. For you, you're starting point may be a little less and then after charging losses you're rounding down to 10 from 10.3 or 10.4kw.
  • Now, on the middle "card" in the app, there's a disconnect between the mi/hr and kw figures. The kw figure is reporting the charge power (not sure if that is gross or net of normal charging losses). The mi/hr is a real time reading of what is actually going in the battery. There are two levels of charging losses, the first one is what is lost to heat mostly, going through the cable, through the charger in the truck to convert to DC to put in the battery. The second is what is used up by the truck while you are charging, and is reflected in the Session Summary section of the UI. This is for low voltage accessories and HVAC (cabin and battery).
  • The first category of losses is more or less constant, but the second is variable. So, you can watch the mi/hr vary as conditions change. Most notably, if you take your app in your hand, go open the vehicle and thus start up the electronics and HVAC, you'll see the mi/hr drop considerably as the compressor is running full speed, etc.

All of the above means that I could see how the improvements they made to vampire drain improved the charge rate when measured in mi/hr, or what was actually making it into the battery on a net basis. The peak rate I saw previously was about 20.5 mi/hr, and now it's something like 21.5, and all that changed was that there is less losses to electronics and HVAC, the amount going in is unchanged from before.
