So, I have had my R1T for little over three weeks. And i have tested 0-60 launch couple times before which is a lot of fun. Now today i find this empty parking lot and thought i would have some fun withe the truck. Now, I back up to one of the parking sports in the end and start sport mode and get all prepared. Now i have break and paddle fully pressed. And let go the break…. The truck started full speed in reverse. I then realized i didn’t put the truck on drive.

I know it is my mistake. But, i got used camera being on while in drive as i use it all time while parallel park and sometimes during drive. I just thought that was the case. Just wanna point that out to owners here.

I haven't done it in launch mode, but while navigating a parking lot with a car right behind me. I'm sure they thought I was a total moron.

I did the same exact thing. Backed up a hill. Fortunately, I hit the brakes before I hit anything outside.

Honestly, with the number of "I punched the gas but thought it was the brakes" or "I thought I was in reverse and went through the garage door" videos you see of people crashing into stores, I fully expect more of this to happen with only a digital D or R hidden on a giant display. Not to mention that you now went from a car that got to 20mph across the parking lot to 60mph across that same lot.

Serious question - front end collision prevention is a thing right (ie car slams on brakes to avoid hitting things in front of you), shouldn't rear end collision prevention be a thing?

Me too....seems software could prevent this. I mean really who wants to launch in reverse?

Happened to me, and I tapped a pole at an EA charger. Cracked trim piece for my efforts but at least it was me that put the first mark on her!

Speaking of rookies, I’m not 100% sure how reverse operates meaning do the electric motors run in reverse or is there a gear change? I think the former and if so, begs the question of what WILL it do in reverse? ICE are limited by gear ratio of the one reverse gear.

It is a thing. Our Volvo XC40 Recharges have RAB (rear auto braking). When we first got the cars and went to back into our garage it activated and I almost ? my pants/had a heart attack because I thought I just hit the garage with my wife’s new car because of how instantly the vehicle stopped. When the RAB activates, the vehicle literally instantly stops…..very jarring, but would prevent you from hitting something in reverse. We have learned to just turn off the feature now backing into our garage…..you can turn it off when you put it into reverse, but you must do this for every driving cycle.

The motors run in reverse. There is no gear changing of any sort.
