Hey all,

I was planning on using my R1T to tow my BlackSeries (~7500# loaded) with the thinking that I could get ~150 miles per charge with ~45 min of charge downtime (3 hr drive 45 min stop). But it does not seem like that was even close to a real picture. It seems more like <100 miles with >1 hr of charge time.

I'm feeling like EV towing isn't here yet and I should just suck it up a get a 3/4 ton diesel until EV trucks and chargers are ready for it.

Thoughts?

Sub'd because I shifted from an R1S reservation to an R1T so we could buy and tow a Black 21HQ...

You should be able to get at least 150 miles if you get the max pack.

My thought on towing is if you tow often or long distances(greater than 500 miles) then go ICE.

My experience so far is 120-140ish miles on a charge with 45-60 minutes of charge. The big problem is that the charging infrastructure isn't dense enough yet. DCFC stations are not always spaced out to make it easy. Many times you'll have to charge early because you won't make it to the next charging station.

I'm debating on doing a road trip from Maryland to South Dakota with my 7x14' enclosed trailer this summer. I plan on taking plenty of time to do it but currently there aren't enough DCFC stations on I-90 in South Dakota and Minnesota.

It seems that at least there are enough of us on here that real stats should start pouring in.

I have a 15 ft travel trailer I plan on towing all around the country, so at least when I gat my R1T I’ll contribute my woes.

Even if you get 150mi per charge, the way most stations are configured you have to disconnect trailer in some other spot before charging so as to not block traffic. And then you have to re-connect once done to continue the trip...so it's a multi faceted issue for towing and charging.

In the military we learned - piss poor prior proper planning...some of you know the rest but it leads to this for EV stations and us owners who want to tow.

I am prepared to unhook but have been fortunate enough to not have to yet. I'm willing to make it a little inconvenient for others but will not block other chargers or block travel lanes completely.

Awesome setup! Do you have any consumption numbers on towing with that trailer and more detail on the trailer weights, etc?

Between 0.8 and 1.5 mi/kwh depending on rain, dry, speed etc. My trailer is a 7x14ft trailer @4500lbs loaded with bike and equipment. I plan on doing some efficiency testing at 50mph, 60mph, etc. once Rivian fixes my cruise control.

Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your test results. What was wrong with your cruise? And another off topic question; does El Cap look different in person than the photos you have seen? If yes, in what way?

I’d be curious to hear what your actuals are when towing once your cruise control is fixed. 150 miles seems weak to me. What’s going to happen when I’m towing around town in phoenix when it’s 115 degrees.

Probably keep the Silverado.
