Saw this info yesterday somewhere and can't remember where. But it was a credible source. You can't do CarPlay or AndroidPlay, but tethering is a feature of Connect+. You don't need Connect+ to use Bluetooth. And as we all know, Bluetooth sucks.
Your post doesn't add up, so maybe it's a terminology problem. Most commonly, the stupid term "tether" is used to mean using your phone as an internet wifi hotspot. It provides internet to other devices. If you do this, you do NOT need Connect+. The whole point of that is to provide a connection. You also don't get ALL of the C+ services, but some such as streaming should work.

We don't all know BT sucks, it doesn't.

I've always been annoyed by the FM radio in my R1S. It cuts out randomly during the first couple minutes of driving, and has horrible reception in urban areas. The switch to streaming seems like more of a positive than negative to me.
If it's on, turn off HD FM.

My post clearly says USB-C. Connect+ is not just a WIFI hotspot. And this discussion is about how the OP wants to get FM and AM when you have no cellular connection.

This is getting very close to being a deal breaker for me no matter how much I otherwise love the R2. Although I live in the middle of San Diego county, cell coverage is almost dead at my house (I have to use WiFi calling on my iPhone) and very spotty in the immediate neighborhood, and encounter a lot of dead zones driving around the county. Going to a pure app-based cellular solutions is quite handicapped.

On top of that, I find that iHeart has only a minimal selection of the San Diego area FM stations, and omitted are a couple of stations I listen to the most, KPBS public radio and the excellent KSDS jazz and blues station. It appears that pretty much any of the actual live radio channels around here are not on iHeart, and the stations they do carry are all those pre-packaged stations that are mass produced elsewhere in studios and passed off as “local” radio. Check the iHeart directory to see what is carried in your area; you may be very disappointed.

For those of us who live in areas where wildfires are common, sometimes the local radio has been critical for health and safety. There was one fire where we were evacuated and numerous homes in our neighborhood were lost, and the fire took out many cell sites and remaining network was completely swamped with traffic, rendering data service unusable. Live radio coverage was essential. I’m sure people in other parts of the country prone to natural disasters have similar experience.

It is ironic that Rivian keeps touting the off road and adventure nature of the R2, but then equips it in a way that requires cellular service for almost everything like navigation and entertainment. This is really another classic example of “enshitification”, where the early promise of tech (in this case streaming) is becoming ruined by ill-advised evolutionary directions. It seems absurd that the ”fully featured” vehicle I might buy today has much less entertainment capability than any car I’ve owned in the last dozen years.
Yes, it's idiotic they can't just have a 1 buck receiver. I don't subscribe to all those music services (I had Alexa/prime music but they removed that), I like listening to NPR and the software, on-board cellphone connection (I do subscribe) are extremely unreliable.
It's the "let's be the coolest" effect.... where you just look stupid.

If that is the case Amazon needs to fire their AI team. I still can't get Alexa to add grocery items correct half the time.

Hey Alexa, add garbage bags to the shopping list...cabbage added to the shopping list! Or, Hey Alexa, cancel my second timer...Okay, which timer do you want cancelled. Is it the timer with one hour, seven mintues, thirty four seconds or is it....yes, it is that timer, I'm not showing a timer with one hour, seven minutes.... lol :headbang:
Did you train Alexa to your voice?

"At the factory level, the actual hardware cost to build an FM/AM tuner and a SiriusXM receiver into a car’s infotainment system is very low—typically adding only $30 to $75 only to the automaker's total bill of materials (BOM)."

I'm kind of surprised to see so many complaints about an "adventure" vehicle not including FM broadcast, do you all go on adventures without any 2-way radios? How do you expect to get messages out if you're in trouble?
And I'm kinda surprised at this comment, considering you are a ham. As a ham, you certainly know that the vast majority of average people have little to no interest in making the effort to pass an exam or learn how to use two way radios (no matter how simple GMRS is) but still go hiking, camping, fishing, boating, bird watching, etc. in areas with little or no cell service. Many don't even know GMRS exists. Hard core outbackers know that GMRS, amateur, etc. are mostly useless in mountainous territory unless a repeater is on a nearby peak, and use a satellite emergnecy device.

When was the last time you supported the Wilderness Protocol by listening for distress calls at the top of the hour on 146.52 or 446.00?

There is zero capability of playing ANY media over USB from your phone. No audio, no video.

Yes, that is through the streaming service. Either iHeart or TuneIn. If you get a chance to sit in an R2 again, turn on the radio so that you see the FM dial. You will see a number of vertical gray bars. Tap your finger on the frequency of an FM station you know of in the area that is not already under one of the bars. IT WILL NOT TUNE IN. Rather, it will jump to the closest gray bars from where you tapped. Those gray bars represent the frequencies of the various stations that have already been set in iHeart or TuneIn, and those are the ONLY stations it will tune into unless more are added in one of those two apps. The only way to tune in an FM (or AM) station is to first search for it in one of these two apps to add it to the car's FM dial from the streaming app.

Super bummed. First thing I do when I get in my Tesla is tune into KGLT - a fantastic local (non-NPR) radio that station that plays mixed programming of great music all day. Nice to have a free airwaves/no app/no subscription. Crappy way to save a few bucks even though over 50% of potential buyers could care less.

I will do another demo and see if I can connect as some have suggested.

Probably not a deal breaker but to me it sucks. When traveling it is sometimes nice to just find local radio especially in university towns/cities.
