Finally relocated my Valentine radar detector from the dash to the mirror, using the original visor mount. Since the plastic cover had plenty of space, as well as there already being slits across parts of the cover, figured it wasn't going to be that noticeable if it didn't work out.

Here's the original mount:

I separated the metal clip from the plastic, heated it up, reshaped it slightly, repeated a few times until it matched the profile of the bottom of the plastic cover, cut off a corner piece, and powdercoated it again to look like this:

I then marked the plastic for where I wanted to cut a slit in the plastic, slightly back from where I formed it to the outside of the plastic, and taped it up to cut a slit:

I then pushed/pulled the mount through, used a heated screwdriver to put a slit at the end, and pushed it down to hold it in place:

Remounted everything... where you can now see it has upward pressure on the front similar to how it was to hold onto a visor:

Then I just put an old suction cup upside down to push the front down & away from the mirror/plastic, and viola, it's solid and just low enough to where I wanted it. You could also do this closer to the windshield, but I wanted to use the front of the clip to hold it down as an extra measure.

This is very solid, tucked close to the mirror, so I'm not worried about this bouncing or anything.

Looks like a clean install. Does the cover seem like it can easily support a radar detector?

I've either used Blendmounts for mounting under the mirror or clear 3M dual-lock directly to the windshield. The R1 seems to have almost no mirror post, which is probably why the Blendmount isn't available.

It definitely can support it… those 4 clips that hold it against the windshield are strong, and a real pain to pull off. It’s thick plastic as well.

Yes I have Vehicles
I still have a couple of V1's but no longer use them mostly because I like to leave the detector on and the falsing just got to annoying. Plus without using an Android some of the 3rd party addons aren't or weren't available. Have things changed with Valentine ? Have they updated with some additional convenience features.

Anyway, nice job on the mount :like:

Did you happened to have pictures of how to open up the cover to see the rear view mirror wires?

I've had multiple V1s over the last 15 years, including one stolen from a smash and grab. Recently I just got tired of all the alerts, even after tuning it to ignore a lot of the frequencies that aren't used around here. I ended up getting a Uniden R8 when I bought the Rivian. Big improvement. While I still love the design and display on the V1 better, the R8 has been a better performer for me and much quieter. R8 also has everything, and you don't have to buy extra addons like the SAVVY for the V1 just to do speed lockout.

I've been putting off getting my 9500ix installed in my R1T. I have a mirrortap and a Blendmount put I am not able to get the plastic piece off to get to the mirror wires. I put more force into prying it off than I am comfortable with and it still won't come off.

Very nice! I currently use a Blendmount on another vehicle with my Escort 360. How did you sort out the power and whats the trick to get the plastic cover off?

Very cool - thanks for sharing. This is a bit more than I would want to try on mine, but I appreciate your craftsmanship. I'm still using the V1 with suction mounts and the power tap, details in this thread: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/radar-detector-hard-wire-who-has-done-it.4253/

To questions about the V1 - I've been using them for 20 years. In the thread linked above someone posted about V1 Driver, an iPhone app that pairs with the V1. I purchased and have been using V1 Driver and I basically get no false alerts any more. I wouldn't want to drive without it.

The Gen2 is much better and the V1Driver app does good to customize and minimize alerts. I basically just have all X and K bands muted, but flash, and only alert on Ka & Laser since those appear to be the most if not all 'real' alerts. Laser is a bit more just for awareness as we all know. I got pinged by a moto cop very well hidden up on an interstate interchange with different bridge levels -- he got me with Laser, but it gave me a chance to show him I got the message and slowed down immediately with the regen and auto brake lights - while some others just kept going with the flow of speeding traffic. Was doing 84 in a 65, and he almost jumped back on his bike, but he let me go... thankfully. I was using Waze, but since he was far enough up on the onramp, Waze didn't alert me but he was on the map... so in this case, the combination of the Waze map, the detector, and an immediate response likely saved me a ticket.
