Got a chance to take the R1T on the beach. The drive out was uneventful but managed to dig myself into the SOFT sand leaving. Shovels and a pull from a friendly Ram driver got us going again. The problem is that it’s easy to spin the tires without realizing it, even in “Sand” mode. Before you know it you’re buried all the way to the battery. The other problem is that traction control can also keep you from getting enough momentum to get going in really soft sand.

Anyway, had a good time at the beach with a couple of my grandsons and got to chat to a park ranger who said that his brother just got his R1T.

Bummer! Did you air down the tires? Dropping the pressure to around 25 psi makes a huge difference and is recommended.

They should add a prompt about airing down when selecting sand mode

Not enough.

I aired down to 35psi. In retrospect I should have dropped to @20psi. I did that today and had no issues. Along with realizing that I need to get momentum going and be gentle on the accelerator until I get some speed going.
The sand gets softer as the day goes on due to evaporation.

Having gone a few times it's good to know as I was with a 4400lb SUV. I did air down to 20psi as well with no trouble last time.

Going to the beach is exactly my first wish-case ™ for the R1T so I very much appreciate your report.

It appears that you had a lesson learned about airing down your tires but maybe made some friends in the process? Looks like 20 PSI is the winning number and I"ll mark that for future reference.

Your grandsons are very lucky to have such a cool grandad with a cool R1T.

If you are looking for an adult, yeti sized, grandson for your next adventure at the beach, I can handle airing down and pushing/pulling out if we get stuck. I can also bring my own snacks. :sun:

Follow-up questions:
  • I've never seen Assateague so empty (at least this time of year). Do you mind telling us what day of the week/time of day you were there?
  • I also didn't know that cars were allowed on the beach - was this a specific section that you were allowed to drive onto?
  • How were the horse flies?

Update: I answered my own questions here: https://www.nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/osv.htm

Been to Assateague many times but never even realized they had an OSV route/area!

I dropped to 20psi while I was in the Outer Banks with my R1T, never felt I was anywhere close to getting stuck. Wonder if 15psi changes everything.

That was the week Sand Mode was unveiled and it was not pushed out to my truck yet so I was using Off-Road, Drift mode.

What psi would you recommend for mud (and this is super slippery mud/clay mix)?

No R1T yet, just the bottle

LOL! I've been going to Assateague for over a decade. It's already busy enough during the high season so let's keep it on the downlow!

December is sooooo much fun to go, you have the whole place to yourself!

I've been in April when it is very quiet but never December. I imagine it is pretty cold? April is cold but not freezing.

My last vehicle was a land rover lr4. I thought it would be a good idea to ignore the air-down suggestions when driving on the beach in the outer banks...because I was driving a land rover. And land rovers can go anywhere.

Got stuck.

Some friendly fishermen dug me out and told me to air down before going any further. Which I did, as I swallowed my pride. No problems after that.
