I gutted an extra Camp Speaker that I had and wanted an OEM empty drawer to put things like an extra roll of toilet paper maybe. Yes it’s nice to have another place to store stuff out of the way from eyes walking by my truck. One disappointment is the fact that it doesn’t lock. For some reason the design team built it that way so it wouldn’t lock if the speaker didn’t communicate that it was there. I have a working camp speaker that I can use if I ever decide to have a loud speaker to disturb the campsite beside mine if I choose to be a happy camper. Check out my picks and let me know what you think of my 300$ empty small new storage space.

Maybe that’s a magic QR code for me to scan and win a prize for the first person crazy enough to gut the speaker. ?

Adventurous! But it gives me some serious gom jabbar vibes. Watch out for your hand.

I think the lock might be a simple hall sensor or electrical contact. Take a look at the camp speaker cubbies on Amazon, some of them show you the mechanism that triggers the locking function, and I bet it's easy to jerry rig (or reinstall if the camp speaker parts already have it).

Legitimate question - why the need for the magnetic lock?

Yea that’s a good idea. Maybe I can send my new drawer design back to Rivian to put a new microprocessor board so it would again be able to communicate with the locking mechanism underneath the center console.

Having something you can quickly make inaccessible in a pinch (e.g., to store the parking meter quarter roll or recording SSD--I don't even know if the Rivian's data connection is there) can be helpful.

I've had my car broken into and the contents quickly rifled through. They didn't break anything and didn't bother with the trunk, so I have good reason to believe a locked compartment can be enough of a barrier to make someone skip it and move onto low hanging fruit. I don't think anyone suggests it is actually, really secure.

I don't have a speaker so I can't speak to this, but isn't that mechanism just unlocked when you're in park?

Ehh...you got me, I don't have one either :) I'll know sometime this week, but before then I'm sure someone else can chime in. I assumed you had to have a key in the car for the lock to work.

My camp speaker stays locked, if I want to pull it out, which I have to on occasion to power cycle it so it stops chiming, I need to go into the menu and unlock it.

I just played around a little bit with my OEM drawer. Turns out that it does, in fact use the electrical contacts. But rather than locking the drawer shut, it locks the drawer in place, you have to unlock it to remove the drawer entirely

It's certainly a stout little speaker, and costs a bundle too! With that in mind, it's a shame that a $100 ("open box" on ebay) JBL Charge 5 blows the Rivian speaker out of the water sonicly speaking.
