How is the *VEHICLE* going to get real time traffic, charger availability, etc. without providing your location to Rivian, ABRP, etc. to get the information it needs?

If Rivian provided updates only via USB, DVD, etc. they would get slammed by the public for being woefully ancient technology.

It's bizarre that people criticize Rivian about sharing their location and having sub-par navigation and autonomy, but also expect a full suite of real-time, personalized location based services to keep up with the competition. o_O

You can't have it both ways.
The vehicle can pull that data in aggregate without providing your exact position as tied to your account.

But also - those could be features that require you to have location sharing on, and if you choose not to use location sharing, you don't get those features. Just like a Tesla without premium data, or my BMW i3 once the 3G network went dark. Or heck, like satellite view mode in the Rivian.

The vehicle shouldn't require location sharing *simply to use maps/basic navigation.* It should be a choice to enable location sharing for "better information."

Personally, I go ahead and share now that Rivian isn't using Alexa any more. But there are people who want to *NOT* share that data. And I'm glad Rivian offers the option, instead of just saying "we're taking this data no matter what" - but it should offer the basic functionality that an offline system offers if you choose not to.

People aren't asking for the full online suite to work without the internet. They're asking for it to work in any fashion as opposed to be completely disabled. In my case I've been asking for the system to work as it did when I bought my truck.

The thing about data is that it lingers. Your history is stored in a database somewhere and it could be there for years. All sorts of things can be teased out of it. Where you live, where you work, where your relatives live, where your kids go to school, where you bank. Nissan even has it in their disclaimers they'll track an owner's sexual orientation if they can use their data to figure it out. I know that anyone with access to Rivian's system or your account can see exactly where you are at any time. I presume that also extends to anyone who Rivian shares that data with, like google...and anyone google shares it with. If you think you can't get burned by that, keep in mind insurers bought Onstar GPS and telemetry data and used it to increase people's rates not only with speed data but where they were driving. Commuting on a road with some badly designed intersections? Work in a place with higher than average claims? It's not that they could do it, they are doing it.

Also I suppose anyone only ever needs one crazy ex to want to make sure there isn't a way they can get stalked.

Trust rivian but do not trust google? I don't think you can do one without the other and have your shit work.

Relatedly, you can get phones that aren't 24/7 tracking devices and have baked in privacy features. But even if you shrug and say you don't care enough to expend the effort, having more spots on the internet with questionable data protection that have that info makes it all the easier it gets out or anyone can get to it when they want to. You'd think it's ridiculous but people have been targeted for armed robbery because of shit they bragged about on facebook. It could just be a scammer looking to spoof a phone number of a place you know so you'll pick up.

It's an open question as to how much actual harm it causes, but the only secure data on a cloud system is data that doesn't exist. Some people simply don't like being vulnerable.

Even non connected cars effectively have have flight data recorders. You'd be shocked to see what can be downloaded after an accident. Not just how fast your were going but where and when you may have lifted or braked or steered all laid out in time.

The Rivian is far far beyond that and records EVERYTHING continuously. Put in a warranty claim because something broke and they can tell how fast you were going and what you were doing when it happened. There are already several options in the settings that are there for show only.

GM sold info to insurance companies to profile people.

Stellantis cars transmit everything without consent or a possible opt out. They are probably the most egregious.
