I'm considering getting one, but the dimensions of the bed are rather unusual. Wondering if anyone has used one and has experience with fit.

The bed is one of the shortest on the market with the tailgate closed. But the tailgate is huge. I'm looking at the Gladiator in comparison because it's at least supported by some of the tent vendors.

Rivian:
Bed, 54"
With tailgate total, 83"

Gladiator:
Bed, 60"
With tailgate total, 81"

The width at the bed rails is radically different however. Rivian 51 and Gladiator nearly 59. But the wheel well width is vastly less on the Gladiator.

I think what really matters is the total length. This product looks good, with a good price, and is rated for the Gladiator. Specs say up to 3" variation is ok:

I’ve thought about just sleeping in a bivy under the manual tonneau cover with the tailgate open. My problem with bed tents and roof top tents is your vehicle is immobilized while the tent is set up. I’m also lazy about time spent setting up camp. My favorite form of camping is cowboy camping so I can see the stars. It really helps to be in California where we have a too long dry season

Same, I may try just my pad and bag there and see. I'll only do fair weather camping.

Same, the one I linked to is their semi-auto which is pretty fast to set up.

We have an earlier version of that tent from the same vendor.

At $80 we have no regrets.

Is perhaps a 6" long in length, but I would rather have that than too short. Have used it a bunch, but do end up using a conventional ground tent when we spend more than one night.

I'm intrigued about the new mechanism to quickly pitch the tent. It would be a boon if one could leave the tent attached, close the tonneau, and drive to the next overnight spot. Let us know if that is doable. It would give you most of the benefit of a rooftop platform without the cost or wind resistance.

FWIW we also got a relatively cheap camp mattress that fits the bed well.

Have used it extensively in the truck and our boat. Still holding up well and makes a big difference. Does not fold up very compact.

Happy camping!

Little bit of a different approach and something I planned on trying. Get the benefits of the truck leveling, close to electrical if needed in the bed, plus easy to setup and take out of the bed if you wanted to go wheeling or use the vehicle

Only in an 5.5' F150 bed. Used the Napier Backroadz Truck Tent. Was fantastic. BUT, you have to empty your bed obviously. Ended up disliking that part but otherwise was great.

I should have mentioned that yes, there's one specifically stated to fit, and no, I'm not giving them $310 for it. I'll tent it on the ground and risk the scorpions and snakes. But it's just a generic tent where they said it fits R1T and Gladiator, which is why I used the Gladiator as my measurement/comparison.

We have an earlier version of that tent from the same vendor.

Thanks, that is SUPER useful info. Does it hang over? Or what happens with the extra material. Do you think the smaller version would come up short (I think no, unsure).

I have something similar for motorcycle camping, however, this is so that I might convince the wife to actually camp overnight without our travel trailer.

I have used a different model from Joytutus for several campouts for the past few years: https://a.co/d/0e1yxpwK

It fits the bed and tailgate fairly well. One drawback is that the flap at the cab window has nowhere to go since it is designed to go over a regular truck bed that is separated from the cab. The first night that we used it, it rained on us and water pooled up in that section. It didn't leak into the tent, but it eventually drained off the sides. Stick something like a pool noodle there to help it run off.

When we were on the go each day, I would partially collapse the tent...unhook the straps, fold the tent poles in half, and let it set in bed and cover the tonneau cover as we moved on.

Don't get a thick air mattress (seen in one of the pics) as it's too bulky in there. We ended up getting a 3" mattress which worked out perfect. https://a.co/d/0bPWi3le

Ok, thanks, this really confirms that the short/compact version is about perfect here. I'm not sure how thick our two air mattresses are, I'll do a driveway campout to test it all.

I have the c6 rev tent with the platform to use as a RTT. The nice thing is that the tent and the platform can be separated so I can easily pull the tent off the platform and stake it to the ground and use it as a ground tent. It’s 84” long so it would stick off the bed an inch if you wanted to use it as a bed tent. The tent portion weights 25lbs. https://c6outdoor.com/collections/rev-roof-top-tent-colllection
