I have some vehicles and stuff
Clubs

The wife and I are on a short vacation and attended the auto show yesterday. I walked away with many answered questions, a renewed excitement about these vehicles as well as some Rivian swag. Overall the vehicles looked (and smelled) amazing. I spoke with many different employees and it appeared all of them were really excited about the company and the products they were part of building. I’m sure I’m forgetting some bits of information, but I will edit this thread as I remember.

As a side note, we looked at many of the other SUVs and trucks available and we were quite surprised at how expensive and how inefficient they were. $70-$100k for a nice SUV and still only getting 19mpg?! Seeing these prices justified our Model X purchase as well as solidified my Rivian purchase(s) next year.
Things I learned after speaking with different Rivian employees (many have been answered before, but here you go):
- Configurator emails for preorders will go out towards the end of 2019 with production models ready for test drives mid to late 2020.
- The vehicles you see are nearly 100% of what will be production models.
- Despite the above statement, one employee told me the door handles will have a slight tweak to make them easier to open.
- No web browser in the infotainment center due to safety concerns.
- Will have heated seats, and working on cooled seats
- The reason for using a mix of technology for autonomous driving is because no one piece is perfect, so it’s basically for redundancy.
- Side pockets in the doors are able to be zipped out so you can clean out all the junk that falls in there.
- Several different trim packages will be available
- No plans to team up with any of the 3rd party charging networks due to the existing and planned growth of the charging grid.
- Couldn’t answer how many preorders they have, but said it was less than the initial response than the Model 3, but they were very excited with the turnout.
- Mitsubishi turned Rivian plant is about 60% complete with expected completion in the next 6 months.
- They have talked about giving preorder holders a factory tour, but nothing set in stone.
- Next viewing/auto show might be Overland Expo in Flagstaff next month.
- I noticed how careful everyone was when handling the doors, frunk, etc. I suspect this is due to being the only production models available and they don’t want to damage anything, but it was interesting.
- Cup holders are hidden underneath the arm rest in the center console and there is a “drawer” that pulls out towards the front of the vehicle under the center console.
- Paddles on each side of the steering wheel will be able to direct torque/traction to each wheel independently. Think of it as selectable drivetrain if there is wheel slippage. It will also be able to invoke “tank mode”.

I flip flop back and forth with this thing. I was concerned about their longevity but their plans to build for other companies has eased that. My big concern now is the option packages.

Every car I have ever bought was fully loaded. The most expensive was 55k out the door.

Do I really want to drop 70k and have to pony up even more money to get all the features I’m seeing in their show cars? Are they going to charge 5-10k to unlock the self driving features? Am I going to have spend tons more than I would in any other car I’m looking at and walk away with less features, unknown quality, unknown longevity, unknown service ease, and still the highest price tag I’ve ever paid?

I think my “wow” from the auto show is wearing off and the sprice issues are settling back in. I know a lot of people will drop 100k on their cars. Not I.
Things you can find on a car less than 50k
Heated cooled multi power seats
Head up display
AWD
Adaptive cruise
LKAS
All your safety features
A safety pick plus from IIHS.
Leather, wood, aluminum interior.

So this car is giving me better gas mileage. Which to be honest I will never equal the premium I’m paying. This car is “greener” however the carbon footprint of that battery pack actually is immensely larger than that of an ICE engine and it will again take at least a decade before the Rivian’s lower carbon fuel cancels out its higher carbon production.

There’s increased performance which is less an issue for me as I’m a pretty speed limit kind of guy.

When I look I wants. When I think I think why would I buy that. If you’re someone buying Range Rovers and 100k plus cars sure though I think you’re equally crazy for paying that much for any car today.

Agreed DocTwinkie, I am interested in Rivian but I wouldn’t rush to order until the configuration starts this way i can make up my mind to see if i really want to dump that much down

I put the 1k down but I’m constantly debating getting a refund.

I've got a Model S and had considered an X but, I'm going to take a wait and see approach before I buy one. I've grown weary of the stock answer I'm given about autonomous driving. ...Soon.
What does "soon" mean?
At least I've got a deposit on an R1S I can always get back should I change my mind.

Thanks for an informative post packed with great photos, PoorPilot. Were you allowed to sit in either vehicle? Any sense for how much legroom there is in the second row when the front seats are run back?

They didn't let us sit in it at the preview, but Brian compared the space to an F-150. He said there is more legroom than the SuperCab, but less than the SuperCrew. If you have ever been in a SuperCrew, then you know there is way TOO MUCH room back there. I'm 6'2", and my buddy's SuperCab Raptor can be a little snug. I think the R1T will be the "Goldilocks" for 2nd row leg room.

I had not seen the interior color palate mock up before, so thank you for that! I talked to Sophia Park (the CMF Designer) and she mentioned that the other color would be a black, but the complete Black Mountain color palate looks great! Compared to the Lunar Rock (which is in the R1S show vehicle) and the Forest Edge (in the R1T), Black Mountain looks to be my favorite.

Awesome info thanks for sharing! Did you happen to ask about plans for servicing / service centers?

This is the first time I've seen the color pallet too. Must be the first time they've had it out on display at an auto show. Did they mention if these are the color options we'll be choosing from for the production R1T and R1S?

Sophia confirmed that Forest Edge and Lunar Rock are confirmed, but she only said they would have a "black" option as well. I can only assume Black Mountain was/is that option...

I know the R1T has the air compressor connection, and both R1T & R1S make use of air suspension.

Anyone know if the R1S has an accessible air compressor connection, and power outlets like the R1T?

I wasn’t able to sit in the vehicle, but the second row seating appeared to have ample leg room. The overall vehicle was taller than I expected, meaning it looked like a full sized SUV and not a hybrid. I spoke with a director in the manufacturing process and asked about the Ford announcement and what that meant. His response was that basically he didn’t know, but Rivian was taking demographic data collected from preorders and planning initial service centers around the most populous areas. He said it would make a lot of sense to use Ford dealerships in more remote areas, at least at first, but he said he had not heard anything concrete yet. I also asked about the auxiliary battery pack for the R1T and he said that even though it was patented, he didn’t see it actually making it to production due to the sheer size and complexity.

Don't think so. Haven't seen them in any R1S pics.

^^^^That would be a shame.

Also, has anyone else noticed that there doesn't appear to be a glovebox?
