Saw this on one of the Facebook groups (which referenced a Tesla group). Seems someone spotted an R1T charging at a Tesla Supercharger. Lots of speculation on if it is part of a beta test or what.

If one day Telsa just up and said, "make an account, get an adapter and you are good to go on the supercharger network and don't have to wait for all the cables on them to be changed out" it would be a pretty big deal I think. If they did it before the holiday travel season t would make them a ton of money too I think...

I have to admit I am skeptical. In the picture it doesn't even look like the charger door is open. Also with the notorious short cables on super charger would it even reach the drivers side based on where it is parked.

Yea that is discussed in the thread. They said this pic was of the person rummaging for the adapter but then they said they plugged it in and the rivian had the green charge light on

Seems like if that was the case he would have snapped another picture and used that one in the post. Too many red flags for me to believe it Actually was able to charge.

Is it possible he thought he could charge there and plugged in, but it didn’t work? Although the spot he is parked in would make that hard to do at all.

I live close to one of tesla's superchargers (0.3mi) and I have seen many other EVs trying to charge there. Also when I had teslas and was charging there almost every time other EVs were trying to charge there. I think this is the same case.
If tesla opens superchargers to everyone here in North America - we will know it immediately. If they are testing it, they can do it at the factory since they have superchargers and everything there.

Tesla's plan to open Superchargers and become eligible for federal grants, so far has nothing to do with selling adapters. Rather they will be installing pedestals with dual plugs- Tesla and CCS.
This is why I doubt the Rivian owner in the photo successfully charged by using what was likely a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter.

Does an adapter even exist that would connect tesla super charger to the DC CCS connectors? I've seen the other direction for Tesla.. But who would even make such a thing if it can't be used anywhere yet?

It doesn't exist, but who is to say they wouldn't make it? Like you said, they have CCS to Tesla. Why not make Tesla to CCS? Wouldn't it be cheaper (and let them make money selling the charging) to enable charging for CCS customers than replacing the the superchargers with the newest dual plugs until they are ready to replace it?

So.... This is not working as claimed.

1. Nobody currently makes a Tesla Supercharger-to-CCS adapter.

2. It currently wouldn't work. Tesla Superchargers data communication protocol is the same protocol as CHAdeMO, not CCS. That's why Tesla offered a CHAdeMO adapter a long time ago - because the Tesla vehicles "speak CHAdeMO" already.

3. It currently wouldn't work because the only way to authorize a Tesla Supercharger in the US is by plugging in to a Tesla vehicle. They have added the "Charge your non-Tesla" to the app, but it isn't active yet. There are no available Superchargers.

Tesla now offers a CCS adapter in the US - for newer Tesla vehicles that are "bilingual" in that the vehicle can "speak" both CCS and CHAdeMO data formats. Largely based on the fact that they *HAD* to make the vehicles "speak CCS" for Europe. This allows compatible Tesla vehicles to charge at CCS stations. Tesla has said that a retrofit will be available for older vehicles (presumably replacing part of the charging circuitry with the new "bilingual" one.)

Tesla is supposedly working on adding CCS connectors to their Superchargers - but none are there yet. The most common theory is that each unit will have two cords - one Tesla-connector-end, one CCS. Similar to how the function in Europe.

There *ARE* adapters to let a J1772-equipped non-Tesla vehicle use a Tesla-connector charging station - but only 240V AC stations, like the Tesla Destination Charger, Tesla Wall Connector, or Tesla Mobile Cord. These adapters do not work on Superchargers. (Absolutely nothing happens - the Supercharger "errs out" and doesn't provide any power.)

My guess? The pictured person used one of those AC-only adapters (TeslaTap, Lectron,) thinking it was working, but it wasn't actually delivering any power.

Interesting. I didn't realize about the CHAdeMO protocol.
