Isn’t the new v2 (or v3, whatever we‘re calling it) introduced on the Dune spec a roll-up design? How Are they fitting that in the existing space?
Apparently it's actually more compact and a roll up design. RivianTrackr touched on Rivian revising the internals of the gear tunnel because of the additional space it could now take advantage of.
I reached out to Munro Live to see if they were planning a V2 tonneau teardown.

We recently shared with R1T owners that we are upgrading the powered tonneau cover. As we go through the process, we are removing the powered tonneau cover from production. We plan to re-introduce this feature later, but a date has not been set. For the foreseeable future, all R1Ts will come with either a manual tonneau cover or no tonneau cover.

Since you have selected a powered tonneau cover, your configuration will need to be updated to either a manual tonneau cover or no tonneau cover. It’s important to note this choice will not impact your delivery timing estimate coming later this month.

Our manual tonneau cover is comprised of four interlocking panels constructed of a durable aluminum composite that slide in and out of the bed’s integrated siderails. When not in use, the panels store in a cargo bag and fit easily in the Gear Tunnel. The manual tonneau cover is fully lockable and offers protection against light weather. If you are taking delivery soon, your panels will ship later. Our current estimate is early 2023. Photos and a full demonstration of the manual tonneau cover will be shared before then.

If you choose no tonneau cover, vehicles delivered in the next few months will include the integrated siderails in the bed. In early 2023, we will transition to a design without the integrated siderails. It’s worth noting that when driving an R1T with no tonneau cover, there is little to no impact on range when the bed is empty.
2.5 years later...

No change to gear tunnel to accommodate V2 tonneau. See this thread for various related info:

So is v1.5 small slats and v2 is roll up, or is v2 small slats and there’s no roll up?

I think V2 is small slats. Which would make V3 roll-up (extra box in gear tunnel).

I'm not sure either of these is correct. I believe the revised stacking PTC had the same slats and overall mechanism but had various improvements aimed at increasing reliability.

The newest version which rolls up has smaller slats.

From a semantic versioning point of view, I am in the camp of v1.5 is revised stacking PTC and v2 is the new small slat roll up version. (This appears to be the official Rivian position, too.)

Generally you only increment the major version if you've broken compatibility with the previous version. Given that the revised stacking tonneau was generally the same as the original one and likely shared at least some parts, it makes sense that it would still be version 1.x.

The new version which likely shares no parts with the original is a true version 2.

Sometimes, I love the internet. Thanks for this well thought out and delivered reply! Makes total sense.

Now get off my lawn and give me something to complain about. 🤣

I’m having a retrofit PTC put on my R1T on 5/27. My 2023 did not come with any kind of bed cover. Curious to see if I get the stacking or roll up version. Also curious to see impact of storage loss in the gear tunnel. I am having the North Phoenix SC do the work.

As has been clarified in other threads, the V1.5 PTC (upgraded-stacking) nor the V2 PTC (newest rolling / small slats) impact the gear tunnel in any way… all use same space (above/outside the gear tunnel) as with the original V1 PTC.
