If you're registering in Florida @moosetags , be aware if you purchase in Illinois, you have to pay Illinois 6% sales tax first. I'm not sure the effect it has on Florida sales tax/registration, I was exempt. Since Washington state doesn't allow direct sales, all sales here are technically in Illinois and "delivered" to WA. But since I was registering in Florida, Illinois wanted my monies.

Next time, I'll be headed to Oregon or Montana for the R1S delivery for the purchase to take place in a sales tax exempt state.

Check the Illinois sales tax reciprocity below:
https://www2.illinois.gov/rev/research/taxrates/Documents/rntrrc/ST-58.pdf
Thte document says if you transfer a plate, you are exempt. Seems like the easiest solution?

We live in NM but would drive to Normal ,ILL to pick up a new Rivian, in a heartbeat... We used to live in Normal, eons ago.
leverage the “we used to live there” thing with Rivian, wether it’s your guide or customer service or whoever. Spin it as a “homecoming” ?

alternatively, if you still know people there…set your deliver address to theirs

I would hope not. We have purchased brand new vehicles outside of Florida twice before. They gave me the MSO (manufacturers statement of origin) and we returned to Florida with the vehicle where I paid Florida sales tax and titled and registered the vehicle. In one instance I got a Michigan temporary tag to drive the vehicle back. In the other instance I brought my Florida tag with me to Louisiana and drove the vehicle back with that. In Florida tags are assigned to the owner and can be reassigned to another vehicle.

That’s pretty standard for most places. Get an MSO and bill of sale, pay Sales taxes at time of registration and all’s well.

That only applies to Leased vehicles.
"Motor vehicles leased to nonresidents using drive-away permits or transferring out-of-state vehicle registration plates will be exempt, "

I interpreted it this way?

"Motor vehicles leased to nonresidents using drive-away permits"
or
"Motor vehicles transferring out-of-state vehicle registration plates will be exempt..."

I'm only a sea lawyer, but I'm pretty sure Illinois means "Motor vehicles leased to nonresidents using (a) drive-away permits or (b) transferring out-of-state vehicle registration plates... will be exempt."

I'd prefer getting my first rock chip close to home. And...there's too much liability having "EV newbies" come pick up and driving across the nation for their first EV trip. Simple really. Too much can go wrong. I don't blame Rivian one bit for limiting that.

Picked mine up from the factory on Thursday. Brought my two kids along, 1 and 4, who really liked the tour and behaved moderately well while signing papers and doing the vehicle walkthrough. It was worth it for the 2 hour drive from my house, but I wouldn't do it again if I had to fly in.

They just expanded the catwalk and will be offering an expanded tour in a few months, ~4 hours. That may be more worthwhile if you really want to see the factory

I asked about factory pick up a few weeks ago and was told that it was not available at that time but they were planning on offering it. I am about two hours north and plan on taking the train to Normal and driving my R1T home. That is what I am hoping for at least.

I can’t see that being the reason at all.

its like if someone who doesn’t know how to drive a manual transmission car buys one and lets all the smoke out of the clutch leaving the lot… the manufacturer/dealer isn’t liable.
