Are you sure the rivian wasn’t on avoid highways or avoid tolls? I did that once and could figure out why it want me to take back roads.
Yup, checked that as well. Both routes - Waze and Rivian had tolls And highways.

At first I thought it was because of traffic, but I cancelled and re-entered it multiple times during the trip. Eventually I left it and just watched the times drop as I ignored the Rivian when it kept trying to reroute me onto its intended. At one point it was a 30 minute reduction by ignoring a single exit. It didn’t really make sense.

Tried to figure out if it was trying to route me to chargers - but I didn’t need to stop on the way there as I got there with 100 miles left.

My best guess was that there’s some mild construction. Maybe it thought the highway was closed. It was big enough that it had lane shifts, but nothing was detoured or closed.

No built-in GPS I've ever had is ever as good as google maps or waze, so I find myself always using my phone instead of the vehicle GPS when it matters.
I used Waze for 3yrs in my Bolt then started using Tesla's built in Nav since 2020 on. IMO, Tesla's nav is just as good as Waze/Google maps. Waze's main advantage is it reports radar traps, road debris, potholes, etc.. which is really nice to have when driving on unfamiliar roads.

Agree. Google is the go to.
As far as re-routing I've always found it hit or miss, at least on our local roads and freeways.

I have had my R1T for a week and absolutely love it, but the traffic on nav system is way to slow in picking up quickly building traffic which happens a lot here in SoCal. My google maps on my phone and our Tesla nav are pretty close to "live traffic". The Rivian nav is nowhere near as close. Hope this improves with OTAs. I really don't want to mount my phone as a third screen.

I tried the built in Nav to get to a fast charger so that the truck would prepare the batteries for fast charging. I had a quick stop to make that was not on the direct route, so I passed the exit on the interstate it wanted me to take on purpose. From my experience with both Waze and Google maps I assumed that it would recognize and re-route, but it doesn't know where I am and tries to navigate from surface streets. It's pretty much useless!
