I’ve put a couple thousand miles on my truck with the tailgate down hauling a canoe or kayak over the past year… no noticeable impact that I’ve been able to detect

Follow-up to my initial inquiry… I drove to Santa Cruz for surfing yesterday and back today. Not a very scientific study, but on the way down I mounted 2 longboards on the bed with the tailgate up (essentially covering the top of the bed but hanging over a few feet) and on the way home I dropped the tailgate and strapped the boards on the bed floor. Mostly 75-80 there and back. 250 miles each way. 2.2kwm on the way there and 2.4kwm on the way home.

For range/efficiency purposes or just because you don’t like tailgates being down? ;-)
1. It is more efficient as per the Myth Busters.
2. It is against the law in OR to drive around with your tail gate down w/o a cargo
3. People look like a dumbass with their tailgate down when then they're driving down the 5.
