Now that I have done a test drive and let the initial irrational exuberance of the R2 launch subside I've realized that the configuration that would work best for me would be a R2 Premium RWD. I don't need the towing or performance that comes with AWD (5.9 sec 0-60 is almost as fast as the 1995 Z28 I had 20 years ago). I do appreciate the additional refinement that comes with the Premium (vent seats, rear drop glass, matrix headlights, etc.) but don't need/want the drive train that it currently comes with. The lower cost and longer range would really make a Premium RWD the ideal config for me. Anyone else in the same boat?

Given the RWD drive bias, the AWD R2 drives in RWD most of the time. Now, I know you're thinking that removing that cost would significantly reduce the vehicle price, especially given that the RWD Standard now has AWD as a $7,000 option. However, given how Rivian prices upgrades, I suspect a "premium" RWD would negate a fair chunk of those cost reductions - so why abandon having AWD when needed for what I suspect would be a much smaller savings?

The AWD is $3500 and the larger battery is $3500. I suspect the motor is around $2k or so which means a Premium RWD would not be that much cheaper. I was surprised how much adding the second motor was since going from P6 to P10 on the EX60 is only around $2K.

Since you live in Chicago, you might want to get the AWD version for those 8 months of winter. ;)

As a native of northern west Michigan the idea of Chicago as having challenging winters has always made me chuckle. Modern traction control with decent tires on a 2WD vehicle is more than needed to traverse all but the most extreme once per 20 year storm.
