I agree some are pretty … boutique

as far as US made (if that matters to you)

I think Oru, GFC, and Dirtbox are the best offerings and offer the most realistic value

considering the cost of a higher end RTT and either a full height bed rack/ camper shell I think that 7-10k is in the “reality” zone of product cost

I will say there is a great thread on Tacoma World of people who DiY their own wedge campers and if I wasn’t renting a studio at the beach that would be my preferred route
That's a lot of hotel stays for that price. Assuming it's an off grid location, I don't know why people wouldn't just camp in a tent on the ground and keep the money
Indeed.

Anecdotally: I had a GFC super lite on my Jeep..the one that ended up being super unobtanium... definitely not worth the prices they charge for this stuff. You live and you learn.. just buy a $200 tent from REI.
Yeah, that's the way to go.

So it looks like this one is the only one with a king bed option. Is that correct?

All of these have significant aerodynamic impacts, but this one looks especially bad. There are huge air gaps between the camper and the truck, that have to make this one the worst, or one of the worst from an efficiency perspective.

Anyway, is this really the only king option of those you looked at? It seems great, except for the efficiency issue.
Oru Designs just released a Bruin XL with either an east/west queen or a king bed. It looks the exact same as the normal Bruin, but wider.

They also released a completely hard sided version called the Pioneer in case you're looking for 1mi/kwh.

Edit, for context I have the TenFold and am sitting at around 1.8 with mixed driving with road trips included

That’s not a topper.
It's not? Then what is it?

Sorry, I am not a pickup truck guy. The only reason I am considering at pickup is because of Rivian.

Can you explain what a topper is for people like me? When I search for toppers I find things that are just like this. More square, but the same function.

I have a travel trailer and was looking at options for over night trips or something a little more back country that saves towing and weight.

Looking at these I would think it would have a huge impact on range with the wind and weight. The price is pretty expensive for the amount of time it is used.

They are cool do not get me wrong I may end up with one but for the time being I ended up with this tent set up. It folds in two, has a mattress, only weights 25lbs, fits under the tonneau cover and I can leave it at the camp site or is quick to pack up. Not for every one but fits perfect in the bed and was inexpensive.

Hooray for the internet!

Why go camping ever?
You can just sleep on your couch for less comfort.

Why travel ever?
You can just read a book for free from your local library.

Why buy a truck?
you probably can do everything in a hatchback.

Why buy a Rivian at all?
You can get further out in a 20 year old taco.

Why take any risk or develop any interests or hobbies?
Strangers will just congregate to tell you why you are wrong.

We are talking about forums for expensive all electric vehicles.
I was taking for granted sometime people like to enjoy the life they're living.

Not everything has to be about practicality or min/maxing expenditures and ROI.

I respond to your "Why" with an emphatic

Why not?
I've been all over the country, have an RV, a truck camper, boat out to islands to tent camp, whatever.

I'm saying those prices are stupid. You can get a tent and camp anywhere you want for a fraction of the price. Hell, buy an airline ticket with the savings and go camping in Alaska.

Besides, you'll get better range without that stuff on your Rivian anyway.

But it's your money. If the photos of "overlanding" in your Rivian on Instagram in a roof top tent is what your love, then great.

I think everyone recognizes that a tent is always an option.
I think people also realize extruded aluminum and custom machined parts designed, tested, manufactured, and assembled in America, by Americans will cost more than some fiberglass poles and polyester sewn over seas by children or robots.

I simply made this list so people could get an idea/ jump off point to compare available options on a thing they are considering.

If you feel that you want something that isn't a pop-top style bed camper shell, that's great!

But please, make a separate thread about it so people who are actually looking for help can get useful information not just "you justify X different than me, what an idiot" vibes that seem to immediately get thrown in to every internet conversation these days.

We’re very grateful for this list and hope you continue updating the list as more vendors explore this market.

The demographic for this type of camper understands what it is and the value it offers.

Again, thank you!

Interesting. I don't find that aesthetically pleasing or functional enough (the taper isn't for me).
It might provide some good functional benefit with a minor impact on range. If so, I am interested in it. Range is a big deal to me.

And I kind of like the unusual shape.

That top is some sort of aero bed cover, different from a topper (camper shell, truck cap) in that it raises completely for access and has no windows. A topper is usually made of aluminum or fiberglass, has windows on the sides for ventilation, and has a glass hatch at the rear for access. These allow for lockable & weather proof storage, and to carry perishable items and pets in the bed of the truck safely. They also add to the aerodynamics of a pickup while adding dedicated storage space.

Yeah I don't think they have actually built more than some prototypes and I am sure not on a Rivian, so available is a stretch. They do have a render of their tent version on an R1S.

Got to see the Hardsider at the Overland Expo in Oregon… pretty good R values for the material, and some unique compartment configurations for the camper.
