In the latest round of updates I'm not seeing any references anymore to the r1s max pack. Does it look like it's not happening?

Rivian would know better than customers. That being said, the website shows a dual motor version available 2024, and standard batteries available 2024. Nothing about a max pack. Draw your own conclusions.

I noticed that on the delivery page - nothing about an R1S max pack at all. Not sure that means it is canceled, but it's definitely not on the foreseeable horizon at this point.

Max pack was originally going to fill the space of the second row of seats. They aren't doing that now. They have said they may eventually release a slightly higher capacity battery, but I wouldn't hold my breath until they just start using higher capacity cells.

I noticed the same and asked CS specifically about this, about five days ago. Answer: Rivian is still working through the R1S max pack engineering, but can't determine a date yet, so they left it off that availability chart for now. The max pack won't be ready in 2022. Possibly not even 2023.

I also asked if Rivian was considering cancelling the max pack and the answer was a hard "no." Too much interest in it.

I was told by a guide that there are several differences between the R1T max and the R1S max that required some reworking. Didn't have a timeframe of availability, but stated it was coming and was not shelved.

That’s why I placed a 2nd pre-order a while back.

The big difference has to be the 14.7" difference in wheelbase.

I really want to see what the under-seat storage area is like in the 2nd row of the R1S. If the 2nd row was fixed (I think it moves to let you adjust 3rd-row legroom in the large pack variant) you might be able to wedge enough cells under the 2nd row, above the rest of the pack, to make up for the shorter wheelbase. I suppose the other option is to have a section of battery behind the rear motor but it might be significantly harder to protect that area from a collision. Obviously, there are significant tradeoffs since they have been talking about this for 3.5 years publically and seemingly still haven't figured it out.

They had it figured out at one point. The Max Pack R1S (or technically the 180kWh R1S as it was known back then) was a 5 seater with the third row deleted to make room for the extra battery cells in the foot wells of the deleted 3rd row. They decided this was not acceptable for some reason. My guess is in their research they believed there was more demand for a 3rd row with the Max Pack so they shelved the 5 seater Max Pack configuration. Finding a "new home" for the extra batteries without significant modification to the vehicle has been the challenge I guess.

What I find interesting is as of this week they have dropped the 5 seat configuration as an option completely now. Hopefully they figure out the battery location in time for my second R1S in a few years.... It's the one I've really been waiting on... my kids are grown so that 3rd row was not important to me....... alas I was clearly in the minority.

Minority, perhaps. But not alone. Max pack 5 seat R1S was what originally sold me on Rivian. Sure, I can fold the 3rd row down and live with the seat belt danglies. And I've realized that the Large pack is probably the more practical choice for 98% of our typical trips. But I will continue to hope for a longer range 5 seater with real cargo space that isn't some compact CUV.

I wonder if it would be easier to do a Max Pack only R1S XL from this thread so they use an unmodified R1T Max Pack skateboard and don’t have to re-engineer the modules, mounting, cooling, wiring, etc. It could be positioned as the flagship product if they could make all of them Max Pack, Adventure, with 3 rows of seating and hopefully a full size spare.

If I’m picturing things correctly, the gear tunnel space on an R1T-based R1S XL would be the footwell space for the 3rd row. I think that means the 3rd row seat cushions may end up on top of the spare tire storage cover. This could make a fold flat seat impossible without a re-design of the 3rd row seat. It could also mean the 3rd row headroom is kids-only unless they do a bump in the roof like the original Land Rover Discovery or raise the entire roof height a bit like a Transit. This may not be a deal-killer since they’d need different side and roof panels for the XL anyway.

Personally, I'd rather not get any longer. I'm just looking to ditch the 3rd row. But I'm sure there would be takers for an XL.

I don’t want a longer R1S, either, but I could see why others would and how it could be the path to a Max Pack R1S.

Unrelated: when I read the wording in some comments my mind dives into the gutter. My initial thought when reading your first sentence was, ”TMI, bragger!” :giggle:
