I've been travelling more than usual lately and charging on the road. I arrived back at my house last night at 9%. I charge to 70% in normal situations and had this max set. Charging started at 10:06pm last night and it charged until shortly after 6am this morning. My 2026 R1S was only able to charge to 69%. I have a Tesla Gen 3 wall connector. I believe it stopped due to Weavegrid and ToU rates (although it's ridiculous as the current only peak times are weekdays from 3pm - 8pm). The off-peak charging schedule in the app is from 8pm - 10am, but charging always starts at 10pm and stops at 6am. I had a Model S before the R1S and it would charge at 48amps/40 mph. I'm currently charging at 48amps, but only see 29 mph or less. Am I missing something? Is my experience similar to others?

What you are missing is that the mph charge rate is not a true metric. It's like saying I refueled my civic at 100 miles per minute, but my Tahoe only gets 45 miles per minute. The only metric that matters is kw, and both should charge at ~11.5kw at 48 amps but your R1S is less efficient than the Tesla, so it gains fewer mph while charging at the same rate.

The battery in your R1S is bigger than the one you had in the Model S.

Using miles as a unit of measure when charging means nothing, as it's not a unit of electrical capacity. I've written this post quite a few times, so I'll just link to it (the thread it was from was about Level 1 charging, but everything still applies....)

So it was set to 70% max, and was at 69% in the morning?

Did it likely just hit 70%, then discharge 1% from hvac/gearguard/etc?

It always amazes me how many Tesla owners/former owners really don't understand charging, battery size, efficiency, etc.

48amps will yield 48 x 240 = 11.5kW as a charging RATE. That's ASSUMING you have 240 volts. You might have 242 or 237 or 235... And it fluctuates over the charging session.

Then, there is LOSS as the electricity goes from the wall to the vehicle and into the battery via the vehicle's onboard charger. It's APPROXIMATELY 7% on a hardwired charger. So, 11.5 turns into 10.7.

Knowing your battery size helps understand how long it will take to charge. Going from X to Y % times size of battery divided by approximately 10.7 is how long it will take, ROUGHLY. The vehicle may also pull power to warm, or cool the battery, as well as charge the 12v battery, or apply an update, or ....

Presuming that you have a max battery you will add about 10% charge in about an hour and twenty to an hour and thirty minutes if your charging circuit can feed it the full 48 amps, temperature dependent. Adding 60% = between 8 and 10 hours depending upon environmental conditions and the particulars of your charging setup. Unlike DC fast charging Level 2 charging is pretty linear until you get near the top of the pack (>95%?) where it slows significantly. You can charge for a couple of hours and extrapolate from there how long it should take to get to your desired SOC +/- a little buffer. The vampires (BMS, preconditioning, gear guard, using the app to wake the vehicle and check on it's SOC) will take a sip so losing a percent is unsurprising.

It stopped at 69%. Likely forced off by Weavegrid. I'll talk to them...better yet email them because you can't call them.

I should have been clearer. I'm charging at 11kW with a max battery. I just expected the charging session to complete to 70%. Thanks for the link. I'll take a look.

It amazes me how many Tesla or Rivian owners find the need to insult the other brand. Both have great products. Enjoy your day.
Wasn't insulting any brand. I was stating that it's a fact that Tesla owners seem to not understand things like battery size and such, based on my experience owing EVs for 5 years now.

Enjoy your day too.

This - absolutely. When you set it to 70% charging stopped as soon as it hit 70% - NOT when it got to 70.9%. It takes next to nothing to drop it down to 69% because it was barely at 70% to begin. It might have been at 70% when you woke it up and that was enough to drop it. We have our "full" charge set to 96% because I wanted to have 95% when we pulled out of the garage on big trips.
