What is the width (front-back) of the R2 cargo crossbars? It should be ~3.5 inches, but I have yet to find the exact specification.

What is the thickness (top-bottom) of the R2 cargo crossbars? It should be ~1.25 inches, but I have yet to find the exact specification.

I have heard that these dimensions on the R1 cargo crossbars caused people to have to use adapters instead of the stock attachments.

IF the latching mechanism is comparable, couldn’t I disassemble my bars, cut off an inch or two from both ends (the open parts in the middle) and call it a day?

I don't have an R1.

The Thule roof box attachment has limitations and R1 is just over the width limit. I am hoping R2 comes in a little smaller and is within spec for this rooftop accessory. The static weights for R1 and R2 crossbars are comparable at 600 pounds. But the dynamic load for R1 is 250 pounds and R2 is 190 pounds. This may be a function of the crossbar size and/or the vehicle size.
