I wanted a shade solution that didn't have to live on our crossbars and was pretty versatile. What we decided to try was the Moonshade. What sold us was it has a bar that can attach at two points anywhere along the bar, so it can be wider than it's attachment points. We don't always have the roof crossbars (had the ski rack and tent on the truck this weekend), so we are hoping to attach it to the crossbar mounting points when we don't have the crossbars installed. We also will try it on the bed mounted crossbars, I'll add those pics when we do.

We tried it out this weekend and we actually had some serious gusts that were blowing over chairs and shaking the truck, it held up pretty impressively.

Great minds think alike. I made the same decisions re: shade devices. First pic is a day trip to Canyon Lake for a little lake and fishing tailgating. Notice there are no guy lines. I am anchoring the poles using a heavy rubber wheel chock at the foot, and stretching a heavy duty bungy cord back up to the canopy. So far it has done well in breezy conditions.
The second pic is my set up for the Fourth of July parade. I use the rear cross bar to anchor the canopy over the pick up bed. It is almost comfortable to be out of the direct sun with your lawn chair and box fan plugged in.

I really like this shade/awning and have been eyeing it up for a little while. Good to see some good reviews of it from some Rivian owners. Thought it would be great to easily setup between my truck and then also use with my Polaris Ranger

Nice. I had seriously considered that before getting my awning but ended up going with an OVS 180. I hadn't thought of using the Moonshade over the bed when you don't have a tent on though.

Does the Moonshade allow for suction cup attachments or does it need to be attached to a crossbar?

It allows for and actually includes several suction cups, I have not tried them yet though.

I picked up a Moonshade last week on sale and I'm so glad that I did. It was a great camping addition during a rainstorm. The 7' side works great against the cab using the suction cups. I am going to add a pool noodle to protect the truck but it's a great product. Highly recommended!

I thought I'd add a picture of a MoonShade on an R1S--just picked it up in anticipation of my annual pilgrimage to Oshkosh where I'll be camping for a few days.

I used silicone covered "reusable ties" to secure the strut pole to the loops on the end of the Rivian roof bars. The canopy came with a couple of the nice Nite Ize ones, but I'm actually using generic ones from Amazon as I have a pile of them.

The pole is quite secure on the truck, and I've been driving around for a couple of days leaving it attached.

Super easy and quick to set up the awning--I'm 5'8" and although I got a stool out didn't feel the need for it at all

As others have reported, the build quality is very nice (which it should be IMHO at the price point)

I would definitely recommend at this point, will add further comments after I've actually camped with it
