Hi guys

Sad for me, my truck cannot perfectly fit inside my garage because i have too many storage, just wondering if it is safe to install my Level 2 charger outside and park on my driveway to charge? Any of you guys installing charger outside? how did you do the protection on weather and theft?

Look at the charger specs, many of them are rated for exterior use.

For theft they do make things like this.

I used one of these to route the cable under my closed garage door when I park outside. Has worked great.

Definitely doable. Many folks have EV but not a garage.

1) almost all EVSE are rated for outdoor use. Verify this of course before you purchase. The charger can either be installed on an exterior wall of your home or mounted to a pedestal. Since you have a garage you could also mount it inside garage and run cord under the door (not recommend for daily charging)

2) If theft is a concern I recommend hard wiring a permanent home charger. The hard wired charger will also charge faster (48 amps providing your electric service can support). A would be theif would have to dismount the charger to make off with it...which is not too likely. If that's still not enough, you can purchase lockable enclosures to lock the charger inside.

Lastly, if your concerned about unauthorized charging, get an EVSE that has an app which will allow you to switch charging on/off remotely. You could also wire in a manual disconnect. I don't recommend turning the breaker on/off daily.

I just have been using the portable charging unit that came with my Nissan leaf, it works fine, but will definitely take much longer to charge the Rivian when I get it, thinking of buying a proper charger that will charge faster, 240Vplug said it’s not recommended to run cable under garage door, but I don’t know why? Doesn’t seem like much pressure on cable when garage door comes down and garage door has rubber seal that acts as cushion. Has anyone had problem tuning cable under door?

This works well for me. Before this box was a cord under the roll up garage door, R1T parked in front like others have posted. No problems with that either. This is more pro looking. Self installed.

I am switching over to a Rivian charger now. Installed on my front circular driveway. Should have the Rivian charger in by next week. I was not happy with any other options so designed this mount. It has a roof to help keep weather off, the roof has built in lighting that is charged by solar cells and added the stainless steel rods to hang the cable on, which I like better than using the body of the charger.

Rivvy in Wisconsin, our 1-car garage belongs to the Mrs. Installed my RIVN charger in early March on south wall of home’s exterior, a little hidden/protected by bushes. It is rated for outdoors. Has charged thru both snow & rain, holding up fine so far. If I’m not parked close to it, can be a stretch to reach to far side of vehicle from charger as mine is on opposite side of charge port. Just measure before you install. I thought about building out a cover w/siding/few shingles etc, but so far seems unneccessary.

I repurposed my old Taycan wall charger housing to use the Rivians charger while I wait for the wall charger. Will post a pic after I install the Rivian wall charger today

It's certainly doable to run under garage door but some challenges can arise. Security of your garage, animals getting into garage, accidentally closing door pinching charging cable are a few that come to mind.

I have left my garage doors cracked over the years. Rodents, snakes, and birds invited themselves in without permission ?

I had my charger installed in the garage and charge inside. But I had it placed so that I could charge at four different locations. I'm fortunate to have a small wall between two of the garage doors so had power run through conduit to where I wanted it and placed it there. The cord is long enough to reach two spots inside the garage and two outside the garage.
