Has anyone cracked the code on Driver + ?

I’m sure this has been discussed in the forum but I couldn’t find it (lazy maybe)

1. is there a map of highways that it is useable?

2. what tech monitors the lanes? Radar? Camera?

3. What is the logic in certain small sections of a highway being not available? Other than obvious lane markers not visible due to wear or construction…

4. how does it know you are not on the wheel? Camera? Steering wheel sensor? Both?

5 does it try to dodge a car merging into your lane like Tesla?

1. Didn't believe so. Most interstates seem to have it, and other highways in more densely populated areas.

2. Only cameras can see the painted lane lines. GPS just makes sure it knows where you are on it's map. It's accurate down to exactly which lane you're in.

3. This happens often when construction made a small change, like shifting lanes left or right, or when an area that used to be a shoulder is now a new lane. Or if lanes get very narrow, it tells us that as well on-screen.

4. Steering wheel sensors only. Either your torque input, or the sensor that's wrapped around the outside of the wheel that can sense your hand on it.

5. Haven't been brave enough to find out.

I've got a strong interest in autonomous driving. Otherwise, just my own observations.

I agree with all of this. But would add

3. the mapping is not complete and is too dependent on known information as contrasted by other systems that just use cameras. Our ioniq is fantastic on even city streets. I noticed that Rivian mapping of driver+ will even break off on certain areas like a rare overpasses or even once going over train tracks.

It seemed to break away a lot with me too, but i do t have a reference point to another vehicle’s performance. Thanks

I'm fairly confident it does not. It won't even react to a car coming into the lane in front of you until all 4 wheels have entered your lane ?

I've been fairly surprised that there isn't some"reckless driver avoidance" for when clearly half their car is in my lane when they don't mean to be.

The steering wheel only uses the capacitive sensors for Driver+, the torque sensing is an alert when you are not using Driver+, either just regular driving or just using the cruise control

I've found on the interstate that I can prop my left knee against the oustide of the steering wheel (approximate 7 o'clock position) and enjoy hands free driving for the most part.

Have found that driver+ is all too often driver - Can be driving on well marked lanes and suddenly it disengages without any apparent reason. This and the erratic traffic reporting will be fixed soon. It is very odd that other cars Tesla, Hyundai etc. seem to have reliable traffic and assisted driving software.

All of my cameras were out for 2 months and Driver+ still worked no problem.

I spoke with Rivian about self driving quite a bit prior to my delivery. Unlike other auto makers, they are not interested in self driving and only offer driver+ as a cruise control with lane-keep. It’s so far down on their list of priorities, if you’re expecting driver+ to be anywhere near Tesla, GM, Hyundai, etc., you’re not going to be happy for a long, long time.
