Half Moon Grey color issue - literally

One should think that maybe this should have been spotted at the factory or at delivery. This make you wonder if they have a quality assurance team. Crazy !

Does anyone know if the issue with the half moon grey R2's getting the wrong color has been fully resolved yet? Or if the ones that did have the issue have been corrected? I just placed my order 9/1 for half moon grey and wondering if there will be a delay?

From what I can tell, Half Moon Grey deliveries have resumed, so Rivian seems to have the issue mostly under control. I still wouldn’t call it fully resolved though.

There were HMG cars in August with clearly mismatched doors or charge-port panels, and Rivian ended up replacing the vehicle instead of trying to repaint it. There was also at least one similar issue on an Esker Silver R2, so it looks more like a QC problem with separately painted parts than something limited to one batch of Half Moon Grey.

I’d just inspect an HMG R2 carefully in daylight before accepting delivery.

I guess I'll find out in ... a few weeks/couple of months! But color checking will definitely be high on my priority list on delivery. And I'll bring another set or 2 of eyes (spouse and adult daughter) to help.

One would hope this would also be high on Rivian's QC list at this point after the original oops. It almost made me switch to my second choice, catalina cove, but if I have to wait a little longer, I can. I've waited 2 and a half years at this point!

I had an issue with my RS1 El cap this past March. Paint defect was more visible on cloudy day. Took about a month, but rivian ended up replacing vehicle.

They tried to push me for repaint, but i told them that they should do a quality check like every other OEM on the planet.

Kinda ridiculous that they let it off the line. $113k SUV should not have any visible flaws.

Be leery of an offer to have your car painted at an Rivians "authorizes" body shop.

When I got my R1, I noticed a bubble in the paint in the middle of the hood about 1-2" from the firewall a couple of days after delivery and reported it. Rivian sent it out to their shop in the Bay Area to be painted and kept it for over a week. I let the paint set for about two months and then put a couple coats of good wax on that panel to protect it.

About six months later, I went out to the truck about 45 minutes after after washing and noticed some purplish bird crap on the hood. I washed at pooh off immediately (the truck was clean after all) and to this day, there's a rough/dull spot where that pooh was sitting for 45 minutes. This tells me that the body shop likely painted and blended it OK, but skimped on the clear coat.

Beware of any body shop who you don't deal directly with...

Yeah, that’s probably the best way to handle it. I’d definitely check the color carefully before signing anything, preferably outside in daylight and from a few different angles. Bringing a couple extra sets of eyes is a good idea too.

The annoying part is that before delivery you can just refuse that VIN. Once you take the car, Rivian can basically say it’s a warranty issue and send it out for repainting.

Hopefully after the Half Moon Gray mix-up this is something they’re checking much more carefully now...
