That’s because that system utilizes resistive heat for the cabin. Two different kinds of heating.
Yup. Just mentioned it because it seems like a step backwards. I realize there were some benefits but just seemed like a faster, smoother, and quieter system in limited time I had it.

Overall the gen1 thermal systems are better implemented than gen2. I am able to compare them on a daily basis and agree with your observations - gen2 is certainty better in many respects but thermal management took a step back as they still have a few things to work out. I expect that R1 gen3 (and R2) will get a better ‘diaper’ over the compressor and mounts that accommodate the variable RPMs much better as well as improving the battery warming circuit.

The same noise from the heat pump on our 3 month old 2026 R1S Dual Max Performance. The compressor also has a vibration that you can feel in the steering wheel.

Ours is currently at the Rivian Service Center (Bothell) starting today. I will report back what they determine.

Here is a video that I sent to the Rivian Service center when reporting the problem.

What did the service center say? I have this exact same issue and it sounds like a jet engine on the inside too

They told me “that’s the noise it’s supposed to make. It’s normal for the heat pump to make those noises.”

I’ve taken mine in 3 times for this. I’m going to file a Lemon Law claim In the near future. $120k cars aren’t supposed to sound like this.

FWIW I just got my Gen2 R1S back from SC, it was originally like the video but is much better now. Not silent, but overall much quieter and just a less concerning type of sound, more like a hum than the original buzz.

I mentioned it vibrated in the steering wheel and pedal sometimes. They said they found a loose or broken heat pump bracket.

Correction was listed as:
Bracket, A/C Compressor, Lower (Remove and Replace)
and part was:
COMPRESSOR BRACKET ASSY LONG TERM PROD Part# PT01214930-C

 Good luck with that Lemon Law attempt.
