Not earth shattering, but discovered when shifting into gear from park, the Rivian does not “close” the door handles, rather it just changes previous state.

Sitting in the car in a parking lot waiting for my daughter, I like to “close” the door handles by selecting car wash mode because people are constantly walking by and I don’t want someone to snag a handle.

Funny thing is if you shift into R or D without turning car wash mode off, it “opens” the handles (or, rather, just changes the last state).

I don't understand why manufactures have powered pop out handles, does it really make the vehicle that much more efficient with drag in exchange for the complexity of these things?

They're used by enough auto makers and put on enough vehicles that at this point, I'd say the answer is yes. The drag reduction is worth it. It wouldn't be this wide spread if it didn't have enough benefit to be worth it.

I think this is because you’re exiting car wash mode by putting it in gear. Try this experiment: lock the doors instead (handles retract) then put it in gear and they should remain closed.

An interesting behavior I’ve noticed is that if someone exits the vehicle without it in Park, only their door unlocks and only their handler extends. If you start to drive slowly (below the auto-lock speed) forward that one handle retracts, and if you come to a stop that one handle extends because the door is still unlocked. I noticed this because we have a property behind a manual gate and this is handy for whichever one of us gets out to unlock the gate and re-lock it once the truck is through.

My door handles aren't very funny at all. Maybe a slightly dry humor, but that's it...

Yup such a dumb trend, especially when they freeze over in an ice storm or get snow behind the handle. Unnecessary complexity for the sake of being "software defined"

I think car companies do these because they project luxury or like you say "software defined"
