Ok: so I was given a Jan/Feb 2023 delivery window. But I still have “powered tonneau” selected. So I chatted up CS to see if I needed to change that and if it would mess with my delivery status. I was told it wouldn’t change my delivery date.
So I change to manual cover. And now I am “processing estimate.”

Now CS has told me that this change won’t mess with my date. If fact I might get it sooner. (not counting on that :))
But they also said, yes, that will be on my configuration page until Jan 2023.

Now I’m a visual guy. And I tend to over think things. So having that “processing estimate” there is not doing my brain any favors.

Nothing I can do and it’s “fine” but if you don’t want the dreaded processing message, do not change a thing.

(And yes, they said that in the email, but I was just following CS advice).

So does that mean if you kept the power tonneau on your config they would have an updated (working) version by January / February? That doesn’t seem likely.

No, they I’m sure would have told me to change it. But I would have a delivery date still on my page. It’s not a difference in truth, but I still dislike it.

TONY in the Rivian Stories interview yesterday stated that "processing estimate " is just to let you know that they acknowledge you updated something.

Yes, true. But I kinda hoped a small (and necessary) change wouldn’t put me without a date for 2 to 3 months. Now if they would update my page back to say Jan/Feb 2023 in a week or two, that would be ok. But I’ve been told it won’t update till Jan.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I shouldn’t have changed my config, even if it had an incorrect item on it.

Had a similar experience today. Sent this email to Rivian customer service. Waiting for a response.

I was excited to receive my delivery estimate yesterday (December - January). Noticing that the configuration editor says "You can switch your model or choose different options at any time without affecting your priority for delivery", I went in to update my configuration with a couple small changes (remove paint protection, add manual tonneau cover).

After saving the changes, I was surprised to see my delivery estimate change to "Processing estimate". Clicking on that notice revealed a notice that "Changes to your order, configuration or delivery address will affect delivery, and it’ll take us some time to make a new estimate."

These two statements appear to conflict with each other. I don't really expect my delivery estimate to change, but it certainly would be disappointing if it did based on the prior reassurance that it wouldn't. Can someone at Rivian please clarify this discrepancy?

That’s absolutely incorrect. My preorder was unchanged the entire time I had it and I had the “processing estimate” message…. Because Rivian has no plan they’re willing to share about service here.

Yes, you’re both right in a way.

If you got a date and then make a change, your date changes to Processing estimate.

If you started with processing estimate, you live somewhere they don’t want to ship to right now.

Some locations might open up sooner than others.

I guess it would have looked bad, but they should have started with a “we will only ship to these locations” for the first couple of years.

It kinda sucks to be away from big cities and open marketplaces when the new, good, fun stuff gets released.

Also why does this information come from a blog rather than Rivian directly to customers? If I didn’t happen to be on this forum I wouldn’t have known, and I’m finding it out AFTER the big nothing sandwich I got yesterda.

Rivian the company doesn’t pass the smell test. A terrible shame since the product Is very good.

Ironically your date would be stuck either way. If you changed nothing your date would say the same thing until January, even if Rivian knew the date was slipping. And now it will say the same thing (processing) until January, even if they know exactly what your date is.

The text is frozen either way, so don’t sweat it. It’s not a live promise.

No mater what you order... your truck will be "no tonneau" due to the hold on including that option TFN. I don't think your config change did anything to your delivery date.. because your build config didn't change at all.
