What a great day! Curtis, my host, picked me up at the Hertz return location at the Bloomington airport and after a quick ride to the factory gave me a tour of the factory. If you have the chance to tour, by all means take it. The sheer scale of the operation is amazing. The ballet of the robots spinning and flipping frame parts, welding robots connecting the pieces, showering sparks and filing the air with the smell of hot metal, conveyor lines of partially finished frames moving from one station to the next, until the wheels and tires are installed, then rolling off the line under it’s own power into QC. This is an absurdly abbreviated description of what’s going on under the roof of a mile long, 4 Million sq ft factory

The hour long tour before delivery had the same effect on me as a 6 six year old being forced to eat breakfast before opening presents on Christmas morning. Curtis drove me around to the delivery center where I met Eddie. Incredibly nice guy. We finished up the paperwork and got my phone connected to the truck in just a few minutes. After a very through explanation of all the screens and a 15 minute introduction drive where he showed me the basics of one pedal driving and talked me through the “launch“ sequence, after which I used up 500 miles of rubber in about 100 feet. This thing is ridiculously fast. We went back to the lobby and joined back up with Curtis who got me a cup of coffee while I picked up some Rivian merch and the store. After that we said our goodbyes and I was headed north with my first EV.

I could have easily made home, 220 miles, but I was hungry and wanted to try my hand at charging. I stopped at an EA in a Sams Club parking lot. I didn't bother with the app and just paid with a CC. Every thing went smoothly, 20 minutes and a chicken sandwich later I was back on the road.

My first EV drive and first day with the R1T went off without a hitch And I couldn’t be happier.

Grey, dreary day in Wisconsin. Had to wait for the fog to burn off.
