Oil prices mean fuck all WRT gas prices.

alao, check out how much Saudi money is in Rivian.
Kewl beans man. Maybe try seeing what happened the last time there was an oil embargo on the US. It would be much worse if that happens today. Again, that is a big if…

If you are concerned for cost, cancel immediately. Go down to Nissan and grab a Rogue. Great vehicle for the price with tons of features. Or grab a Kia Sportage. These aren't in the same class as the R1S but they are great vehicles.

Cars are about emotion and desire not cost savings, never have been.

I’d keep the Lexus if it still makes you happy and suits your needs.

I wanted the Rivian, but I don’t really need it.

For some on this forum the purchase of an R1S is a rounding error on their finances. For some it's an irresponsible decision that puts their financial situation at risk. Most fall somewhere between the extreme ends of that spectrum.

Only you can decide where you are on that sliding bar. All signs point towards a difficult economic climate ahead so if you are closer to the 'I don't have 6 Tesla's in my garage' category then the smart money is to not move ahead with purchasing the vehicle.

You could drive yourself crazy trying to prognosticate about gas prices, resale values and so on but at the end of the day nobody really knows so the thing you might want to base your decision on is will I enjoy this vehicle enough to justify the cost, and can my current financial situation handle a purchase of this nature if something unexpected happens.

I'm not a 'baller' like some of the folks on this forum so having never personally owned a McLaren, Raptor, Model X etc. I can tell you this vehicle is more like an 'experience' for me than it is just a car. I get a lot of utility out of it, and while making this purchase likely delayed my retirement by some yet to be determined amount of time I'm having a blast having adventures in it with my son, and will continue to do so over the next n number of years. Note - that's a non-economic justification.

Nobody can tell you what's right for you (I'm sure you know this) but I'd keep it simple and narrow down your decision criteria to a few important things and then @#$# or get off the fence. :)
I HAVE driven and owned some of those high end cars and the Rivian STILL is an experience for me when I drive it. The R1's are on the cutting edge of vehicle technology and you aren't going to replicate that very easily.

Take what I am about to type with a grain of salt - I've been wrong in the past; I have also been right.

I believe with the cosying up with Saudi Arabia and Russia that we may well see an oil embargo in 2023. If that happens all bets are off.
How fun that we’re running down our strategic oil reserve to drop gas prices a few cents before the election.

I love the RS1, but just can't justify the investment at this point with the looming recession.
I did a quick breakeven analysis based on my current driving costs, and the cost of the RS1 would take 26 years to recoup. And I currently drive an LX570.
Yes, the vehicle is gorgeous. Yes, it is fast as sh!t
And Yes great for the environment. But $80k for transportation is tough to swallow. I'd hate to give up my spot for the quad-motor since they wont be making them anymore.

Can anyone talk me off the fence?
I have a couple thoughts. One is we are already in the recession. Two consecutive quarters of negative gross domestic product (GDP). We hit that in Q3. Also if you can afford a LX570, the RS1 should be no problem for you. And if you are running some sort of analysis of buying a new car, you have way too much time on your hands. Spoiler Alert- when you die you can't take your assets with you. Enjoy them now.

The fact you are even asking the question and refer to it as an RS1 leads me to think you're a troll. Don't buy it, keep overpaying for petrol, and let someone who cares buy the R1S you supposedly have a reservation for. Does that help you plummet off the fence?

Don't get it.

It's a luxury purchase, if you're not 100% sure you don't buy it.
Agree 100% with this. It's a just vehicle, nothing more.

The newness will disappear and you'll be left with buyers remorse anyways. Buy it later if you change your mind.
The over-worshipping praise here, does get nauseating.

Don’t buy it. Rivian’s customer service is absolute garbage. For all the shit-talking Elon and Tesla get on this forum RJ and Rivian just might be worse.

That is unless you like giving tens of thousands of dollars to a company that doesn’t value you as a customer.

First of all this is not an electric truck exclusively. It is also a sports car, robot, computer, hot spot, air compressor, and charging station. You have to compare to a Range Rover, loaded Raptor, or Dodge. Then add the fuel and it’s cheaper. But let’s be honest. If you can’t afford a luxury SUV or loaded 4x4 then you’re better off getting the F 150 lightening..

I predict that three business models will rise to the surface:
1. Own your own car
2. Monthly subscription
3. Rideshare

the average cost of these vehicles is going to keep going up so by waiting you will pay more when you commit and end up at the back of the line.

Gas and diesel tech is over. Hybrids are over. Natural gas and hydrogen will not scale and they are over.

the Rivian will explode in value. They make the Amazon vans, are backed in part by Jeff Bezos, just inked a European van deal with Mercedes, and have delivered the most over engineered mass produced vehicle in history.

the R1T and S quad motors are unicorns. The company will not survive without the two motor versions. But a Mercedes is still a Mercedes. This is not just a luxury vehicle, this is the best vehicle ever mass produced. So no, it’s not for everyone.

I get that the math doesn’t add up. Even with the savings on fuel I still paid $20k more than my last ICE vehicle. But here’s the thing. There is nothing like it. I mean if my Tesla owning friends need a charge the Rivian can charge it.

and finally, if $ is a major concern you can take delivery and flip it for $20-$25k over list.

BTW, the R1S handles better and parks easier because of the shorter wheelbase. No gear tunnel.

good luck. Go electric or your ridesharing. ;)
