I’m down at our ranch this weekend. I’ve got this 50amp outlet (10-50?) for running a welder in the barn. Can I charge a rivian from it or do I need to get a 14-50 outlet installed?

That looks like it's a NEMA 10-50. Yes, that can be used with most EVSEs if you change out the pigtail or use an adapter.

There are adapters. 10-50 had some drawbacks/risks without a separate ground, but have the outlet checked out and I think you could be good to go

Should work voltage wise. Just need an adapter similar to this:

For a welder that should have 2 hots and earth (ground) which is what your charger will need. First thing to do is verify that the third pin is indeed earth and not neutral. If it'neutral, rewire at your panel (being sure to mark the wire now connected to earth with green tape at both ends). Make an adapter from 10-50P plug and 14-50R obtained from Lowes or the Despot or Amazon. Or just buy one of these xttps://www.amazon.com/Conntek-EV1050T-Adapter-compatible-Vehicles/dp/B00STD9SJY (change the x to an h to make this a URL).

Rivian may, at some point, sell an adapter.

We have a 50amp outlet on the farm that was for a welder. It had to be re-wired to work with our Clipper Creek Nema14-50. Got a Nema 14-50 outlet, researched how to change the wiring and did myself VERY CAREFULLY. Works fine.

You have to be careful with these plugs. Some are not designed for EV charging even though they are 240. Amazon is labeling some dryer receptacles as "not for EV charging". Found this video when researching plugs:

Sorry honey, I didn't get a chance to watch the YouTube video on the forum, so I think that's why the house burned down :like:
The electrical outlet charging options is a pretty deep pool of confusion for most people I think (certainly me).

Some of these outlets (like welder outlets) aren't meant to handle high current for long periods of time, such as when charging an EV. Use caution, and/or lower your amp draw in the truck.

Alright, this seems like the right thread to ask this charging question. How about charging using the mobile charger on a 220V 20A plug. I'm waiting for my wall charger but was impatient and bought a 6-20P to 14-50R adapter for quicker 220V charging. It started charging but after a minute would stop and restart. I chatted with customer service but all they could tell me was that the 220V charging is meant to be at 32A and maybe that is why it keeps stopping. Any thoughts or experience?

That is a NEMA 6-20 plug (http://carcharging.us/tech/receptacles.php), and has a 240V 20A breaker. So maximum charging amps should be 16A. Which should be set in the car or on the portable charger.

Which portable charger are you using?

Im using the Rivian travel charger that came with the truck. I throttled it down to 10 A thinking it was overpowering the circuit but it still repeatedly stopped, and then started again. And a minute later stopped, etc. Could it be that 240 V charging needs 32 A?

So this video is making a judgement on outlet quality only by their weight and price? Neither have anything to do with their ability to pass current.
The vast majority of outlet failures including those installed by electricians are simply because the screws in back were too loose or loosened up over time. They should be super tight and well clamped around all conductors on the cable, and it is well worth retightening after a few months of use. I used a $12 Leviton for four years, outside no less.
