Every pickup truck in the state of California is a commercial vehicle. Weight has no relevance.
Unless if you affix a camper shell to the back. Then you can opt out of the classification.

I literally filled it out today. Once finished I got an e-sign document as the weight of the truck makes it commercial. So far that’s where I at in the process…. Hopefully the link comes soonish. I’m 45 days out from expiring. I’m head to Mexico for two weeks and dropping my rivian off at the San Jose for service.

Side note/Pro tip - service center is right next San Jose airport lined up service to start same day as vacation. Free secure long term parking and they fix my truck.
Was the form you e-signed the "DECLARATION OF GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT (GVW)/ COMBINED GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT (CGW)"? Do we actually need that form? According to this page:

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handb.../commercial-vehicle-registration-act-of-cvra/

Pickups are exempt from filling out the form. So confusing....

It has to be “permanently” attached, I believe. Whatever that means.

If you were to be caught without the shell you would get a big fine. Think it reduces your cost by maybe 1/3. You also
Need to take your truck to to be inspected if I remember correctly.

My current registration states it's a commercial vehicle. So I went with it.
yeah i think all pickups in CA are commercial vehicles, it's just weird they make you fill out a that form when pickups are supposed to be exempt from it.

If you didn’t know majority of the Rivian’s in California will not automatically get the renewal notification in the mail.

I have spoken to Rivian and it appears it’s a glitch in CA DMV system. So they suggested go into the DMV or AAA. I despise both options.

Got the DMV on the phone yesterday and they walked me through a work around called a “complex renewal” you fill out a bunch of paper work online and they send you a link to pay online.

Here is the link.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv-v...on-renewal/vehicle-registration-renewal-form/

Saved me me from a bunch of late fees.

Thank you so much! This was very helpful! I'll be seeing you around town!

I took my current registration to AAA today and (after the 25 min wait) they quickly processed my renewal.

I never received my renewal notice in the mail and had the same issue as the OP when I looked up truck on the CA DMV website, I didn't fill out any other forms.

I thought I was going to have to do something similar. I usually receive my renewal notice for my other vehicles at least 60 days in advance. At 30 days out I logged in to the DMV to see if there was a record of it. There was. Coincidentally, I went out to the mailbox the next day or so and there was the renewal. It certainly was a shocker at over $1100.

I submitted my online renew on Thursday. Still haven't heard back. Getting a little nervous. I called AAA they said they wouldn't help me since it was a commercial vehicle. I explained to the agent all pick up trucks in CA are registered as commercial vehicles. She told me I will have to deal with the DMV direct. If I don't hear back via email in a few more days I will make a trip to the DMV. :(
