Or 40k or 60k for that matter. Unfortunately nobody will really know for now. The early Tesla motors were getting replaced around 60-70,000 miles. Luckily there was a good warranty on that.

The other issue you may run into is if you wait too long, the technology reliability resets and now need to wait to see how the reliability shakes out. It could be better or it could be worse. How do you time it? If they move on from the Bosche motors and go to Rivian's in house motors for everything as an example. You don't want to have jumped in and now be left with legacy support, but you would then lose all the reliability data you hav so far.

How long do you wait for a Rivian?

I've seen folks hold onto a signature Model X reservation for reliability. Then right when they were about to jump in, they launched AP2. They ended up financially better than I did left with my AP1. They then waited for AP2 to flush out...and lost free supercharging. Some jumped in, only to be burned with the AP2.5 refresh. Those that didn't wanted to see what 2.5 would bring and rumors of Raven. Raven ended up taking 2 years. But now there's the Model Y...

It's a tough call. I've decided to jump in and convinced myself I wanted to see 10,000 cars built first. Am I willing to wait much longer? Maybe a little, but not a lot. I'm happy with the options, trims, and packages right now.

But there are certainly a lot of what ifs?
- What if they changed the wood color?
- What if the yellow accents disappeared?
- What if the seat backs no longer had usb-c or hooks?
- What if they added a glove box?
- What if there's no more rear under seat storage?
- What if the rear seats now fold up for more room?
- What if Munro gets them to shave 500lbs?
- What if next year it gets better efficiency?
Awesome feedback! Thank you! ? ? ?

I mean the truck is awesome, hands down. You will love it.

It just boils down to what is going to bother you. The gear lash is minor, if you listen to music you wont’ even hear it. Will your Rivian break and need service, eventually yes. Will you need multiple service calls in the first 6 months/18k miles (like I have) that is TBD as more people log miles and time with the truck. I may be an outlier and also I have an early VIN 31XX.

What I would want to know:

- Where is Rivian going to service my truck? Is there is a service center nearby?
- If not you will have to deal with towing for service, and non-warranty stuff may be at your expense. Also it typically means even a short service call takes a week.
- Will I be able to survive comfortably with an Enterprise Rental or Uber credits while in service? Do I drive on gravel roads often? Do I need to transport my pet? At least these are the issues that I have.
My service center is only a out 25 minutes away! Why are you worried about gravel?

If that smoke show you had been in heavy pursuit of for the past three years finally offered it up tonight, or say 6 months from now, which would you choose?

Don’t fail the stupid test.
If it's much improved in 6 months, could be worth the wait. ?

I am waiting for my truck to be built and my SC is 2 1/2 hours away. After reading the post here I too had some reservations about taking delivery. But when I see the people that are enjoying their new R1T's I am more than ready to take delivery any time and will deal with any potential problems as they arise. I want it s00n!

For what it’s worth I loved our Land Rovers. I have extremely fond memories of them. I’d buy another one today. But they spent a lot of time at the dealer being worked on (the great loaners made up for it but still).
We all have a different threshold for dealing with problems. I’d be more willing to deal with them if Rivian offered loaners - Uber credit or rental (unless Suburban or Tahoe) wouldn’t do the trick for us.
I do agree with the ones saying that there won’t be much difference between now and a year down the line however we’ve already seen some improvement.
As for big ticket items… let’s see how Rivian handles that.
Whatever your decision is, it’ll be the right one for you.
My only thing is, I would definitely not get a used one. Too many reports of people selling due to multiple or recurring problems.

It is explicitly forbidden in Enterprise rental contracts.

See that's my other thought....people may shy away from 2022 used models in a couple years from now. We'll see how much they quote me for trade and I'll go from there. Thanks for the input!

Just my $.02 as you sound like me five months ago. I’m three months into my R1T. I’ve only owned trucks, Chevy, RAM, Mazda and Nissan, most recently a 2011 and 2019 RAM Laramie. The only thing I miss about the full size trucks is the room. That’s seriously it. I don’t know how I’ll feel in another year or six years from now, but this is nicest, most fun and capable truck I’ve owned. I love it. And, I use it as a truck, not a concrete road only toy. I’ve already got scratches and dings, and I’m ok with that because there’s going to be plenty more.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet but I would buy now but drag out the process.

You don't want to take delivery until after 9/30. You do not want to take delivery during the end of quarter rush. That is begging for quality issues.

They already assigned me a VIN, so I'm assuming the truck is ready.

It's a roll of the dice now or in 12 months. They won't suddenly have Toyota level of quality by next year. I've had no serious issues with my truck, only minor things that will wait until I "need" to have a service visit.

If you wait, there is the risk they change pricing or something else. There is also the unknown impact of the tax credit. You will definitely get the credit if you take delivery this year. Next year is a roll of the dice.

Any major fixes should be rolled down to your truck (tonneau cover, CV joints, etc).
The bolded comment would be the most pertinent reason to move forward than wait if it were me. I know the BPA is supposed to cover deliveries in 2023, but there is still a nonzero chance that it won't be accepted. Take your delivery now and you are guaranteed $7.5K.

Plus, as others mentioned, a few more months of production may not address your concerns if those are more design-related or long-term type issues.

Your mileage will vary for initial quality. Got mine in March; haven't had any issues. Go ahead and buy it now. You have a good warranty. Any issues you may have down the road will be repaired for free.

True on the tax credit...not too confident that will roll into 2023.
