This winter I was turning slowly out of our driveway onto the road. Felt the rearend skid on a snowy day and looked in the drivers side mirror only to see the rear tire staring at me, unnaturally coming out of the wheel well. A flatbed to Boston and a $9000 bill later all was "well". Service opined that I had put the transmission under incredible stress in some off road situation. Vehicle has never been offroad other than a lawn. No scratches on belly pan. And of course I was 3,000 miles out of warranty.

Received a promotional upgrade email offering incentives to trade up. Have just swapped the Gen1 for a Gen2 with the max battery, and I love it. Delivery process not so much. Signed the purchase paperwork 4x. Asked for a full size spare which was not installed. Then had the experience of not being able to upgrade my iPhone to the IOS 17 required for the lates app. but of courxe my iPhone x doesn't go beyond IOS 16.7. And of course there is no downgrade/older version support according to customer service. So now I get to buy a new iPhone! apparently no keyfobs yet for the Gen2 and the Gen1 keyfobs don't work.

Oh and I had to produce the promotional email for the delivery guys. They initially told me it was only for new purchases but it was very clearly stated as for upgrades. Eventually got the promotion after asking for it multiple times.

I've done some iOS development and can't think of anything in 17 that the app needs that is not available in 16. I think this was a sloppy programmer choice. In any event would have been nice to have a sunset notification

I get your frustration about the delivery process but the iPhone issue sorry, time to upgrade. Apple is not only halfway though IOS 18 but about to release 26 (version 19). Rivian shouldn't have to support a software version that Apple themselves no longer does.

I understand frustration of mission/cost creep. But cost of a new phone is a fraction of what you just spent upgrading your ride. And built-in obsolescence with tech and personal electronics shouldn't be a shock to anyone. Plus, you don't have to get a new iPhone if you don't want to. iOS 17 supports older devices too and you can buy refurbished iPhones from Apple. My 12 Pro is running iOS 18.3 and the current Rivian mobile app just fine. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/iphone

I don't see how the phone is Rivian's fault or problem. Your phone is old as shit, Apple creates software improvements all the time and has a very transparent support and development cycle. Once you've reached the end of that cycle, you need to upgrade for security and functionality purposes.

Notably, every year, phones receive a spec bump. Software is written based on current technology, and features are made to use those resources. At the same time assholes are always finding ways to break into your phones and steal stuff off them. Apple cannot support increased security on phones past 7 years without stalling future upgrades. Eventually, the spec between your phone and the current one is too great to adapt the software to work on both. Frankly, I think 7 years is pretty generous.
