I notice I can’t set a recurring timer to precondition the cabin. Is there an API available so that I can add this functionality myself?

I’ve been meaning to see if I can set up a routine with Alexa, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Not sure if it’s even possible though. I’m hoping they add it as an OTA soon because I’m kinda lazy and a fan of automation haha.

My car is parked outside, hooked up to 240V charging, with a predictable commute. This feature is table stakes, IMHO. As is the ability to avoid drawing power from the battery when plugged in.

Maybe I’m showing my ignorance but is there really a car that can do this? I would expect that the internal electronics are powered from a DC-DC converter going from the traction battery to the 12v system (complete with 12v battery). Would seem like a bunch of extra parts and complication to also connect the AC charger to the 12v system.

I might be mistaken, but I believe our MY does. When we precondition the car, and it’s plugged in, the charger lights up so I think the car is getting its power to run the HVAC from the 240V power supply. Someone here probably knows for sure though and can confirm or debunk my theory.

Sorry, I should have been more precise. I mean the ability to preheat or cool without discharging the battery when plugged in, not necessarily powering the other 12V systems directly from the plug.

Climate can draw many kilowatts of power, but Rivian will draw down the battery and then charge it again later, rather than use the power directly from the plug. Teslas and Volvos can do this. I don’t know whether they share on the same on-board rectifier which is used to charge the main battery.

My Mach E also pulls power from the charger to precondition instead of pulling from the battery.

I don't have my vehicle yet, but I bet you could set up an automation through the shortcuts app to at a specific time daily, open the rivian app and choose a command.

The Rivian app uses graphql APIs to make it's calls but any command sent to the truck has to be signed by the private key used in the phone-as-key registration. It's possible but not easy.

If you don't already have a Reddit account, I would suggest creating one, joining the Rivian sub and then tag @WassymRivian and @Tcarvano with your recommendations and touch on rivian drawing power from the charger to condition while plugged in, and not the battery.

That’s a great idea. Unfortunately the app. doesn’t expose any shortcuts.
