Patent showing how to vent and remove the pop out R2 rear side windows. Credit to @Hilbe

A removable pop out window provides a modular design.

The window is configurable for multiple positions, including closed, vented, removable (e.g., pop out) positions, and combination thereof. The window may include latches, actuators, living hinges, or a combination thereof to allow for the multiple positions.

The window may be modular, configured to be installed either as fixed of removable in a vehicle.

Can the windows act as wings for powered flight?

And we’ve come full circle to the Plymouth Grand Voyager. Sure you had to work more to pop those windows out, but the top trim were at least motorized.

Patent, sure. Actual production vehicle, not likely. Those rear quarter panels will vent, but I doubt they’ll pop completely out. Seems like a safety issue. Also where would you store the glass?

The R1s originally had a removable carbon fiber roof panel instead of fixed glass, but they ditched it due to complexity. They’re trying to keep the R2 simple and easy to manufacture. The dropdown window and the hidden rear wiper will be complex enough.

And how much more would consumers be willing to pay for that? are there enough to make a business case? Rhetorical. Jeep would love to have them as buyers for the Recon. Jeep needs them.

Regarding removable top panels, RJ has already spoken several times on the topic. Again last week during live podcast with Doug Demuro. They actually had tooling and prototype made for the R1, but ultimately determined it's too complex and costly for mass production. They are trying to make profit, not burn more cash. Jeep can do it because it's part of a much larger group of brands. Rivian is on its own, with vehicle manufacturing.
