Self recovery would have been really hard there. Even with boards or winch, I think it would have been tough. Not surprising it got stuck where it did. What I am surprised about is that the guy drove out there without any self recovery gear. If he had a set of boards he might have been able to get himself out. Perhaps not, because it was buried up to the frame.
Amazing story to tell! You got a MORR shirt!I was the one that they pulled out. I have a SxS and have done this edge route many times. What I didn’t account for was the massive weight that shifted down the hill. Two SxS came up on the hill and have the right of way. However they took the right side. The momentum stop and the 17deg roll angle didn’t help.
It was tougher than their video showed. The Rivian kept drifting downhill. Their rig was 4500 lbs.

They were very reasonable. They came out in 20 min and charged me $250. I tipped $100. Another place that I was able to get through first, wanted to $600.Amazing story to tell! You got a MORR shirt!
Quick question: do they charge people for the rescues or do they make money from YouTube views? I’ve always wondered.
I would say the say applies to off-roading in the rain (in this case after days of rainfall). I got buried in the mud when I pulled off a long paved driveway to let a car pass the other direction. Unbeknown to me, I started sinking before I even stopped the truck, and after stopping it was impossible to get out. The ground was like quicksand. As a veteran of the Imperial dunes here are some basic soft sand rules.
Air down
Don't stop in soft sand. Speed Is your friend.
Never stop in soft sand on an uphill. If you do , reverse out.
Don't depend on boards to get you out. They usually just kick out the back.
The second you feel like you are sticking, stop and reassess. You'll just bury yourself if you persist.
Never travel as a sole vehicle. Always in groups or at least one other .
Don't climb sand hills or shoot bowls in a Rivian or any other heavy truck
Learn from those more experienced and not the hard way.
Rivian is a great all around truck but it is not a serious sand vehicle.
Watch some YouTube videos of Glamis dunes mishaps.
More proof that pictures/video don't show how tough some of the trails are.I was the one that they pulled out. I have a SxS and have done this edge route many times. On that path it was pretty level and 2deg downhill gradient. Once the left side went down, it just got worst.More proof that pictures/video don't show how tough some of the trails are.
17 degree roll angle is pretty significant. Heck, when I get to 12, I get nervous and find another way usually.
Cool that you got to meet those guys. I watch their videos all the time.
I noticed you were on the 22"s with some AT tires. How were they in the sand? Did you get scratches in the wheels from the sand (especially when they were pulling your wheel face into it?). I know you can't air down the 22s that much.
