I made a recent involuntary switch from a G1 (2024) R1T to a G2 (2025) R1T as covered in this thread: Another ‘Murdered’ Rivian
These are all fairly small things, and maybe some of these changes have been mentioned by others, but thought I’d illuminate a few of the little G1/G2 differences I’ve noticed. Hope this is helpful to others.
1. There appears to be a vent or filter in the interior drivers side of the spare tire compartment. Was this to help with the complaints about items in the compartment getting mildew/mold? Where does it vent to?
Spare tire compartment also seems to ‘pop’ open a tiny bit better and is then easier to raise cover on than my G1. Seems to me the support struts have a stronger spring/hydraulics, etc. Still best to push down on each side when closing to ensure both side latches ‘click’.
2. Electric outlet panel and air compressor panel in truck bed have spring-loaded doors or detents that help keep them closed unless you specifically want them open (did the electrical outlet panel already have this?). This was an issue in G1 for which aftermarket 3D print makers were called upon to resolve.
3. Electric interior door opener (thumb) buttons - I actually like them better - and flush mechanical emergency door opening handles similar to the G1 standard door opener handles. Some owners say the doors don’t feel as solid as G1 upon closing. I do notice that difference in ‘clunk’ when closing, but my concern was that maybe that was partly because door noise insulation had been dialed back for cost cutting. In fact the vehicle seems easily as quiet as before to me (including the AC). I think the door lock hardware change makes the door lock/unlock feel ‘crisper’, so no downside to me.
4. I purchased with ‘utility panel option’, so came with air compressor hose. But instead of being located in the (very tight fit) driver side gear tunnel door compartment, the compartment in the driver side gear tunnel door on my delivered G2 was empty and available for stowing other items. The air compressor hose (seemingly same part, in same case, including tire sealant kit) was located in a custom foam insert in the lower frunk compartment. The air compressor hose and case will still fit in the gear tunnel door compartment if desired. Interestingly, the space in the foam insert below the air compressor hose case shows an impression for some other device - perhaps offered in some trims or a Canadian version? It appears to me to look like a torque wrench impression or something similar.
5. The G1 first aid kit was larger and more comprehensive and was located in the passenger side gear tunnel door compartment. In the G2 the compartment in the passenger side gear tunnel door was empty and available for stowing other items. A smaller first aid kit in a smaller Rivian branded case was located in a custom foam insert in the lower frunk compartment. This smaller first aid kit is slightly larger than the small one that came in the original Rivian ‘Field Kit’ option (but pretty much same contents as that one). Basically bandaids and similar supplies.
6. Both the gear tunnel floor and the storage space under the back seat have custom rubber/plastic mats in them (a rumor I heard was that they might be removed in G2 as a cost cutting measure). Size of gear tunnel and under back seat storage appears to my eye to be the exactly same and no less volume (and each also still has it’s own mat). I have ‘premium audio’ so passenger side under back seat is taken up by subwoofer, as in G1.
7. Standard/No longer standard items that have been discussed elsewhere: No standard key fob; no gear guard cable; no passenger side front seat compartment below seat; No camp speaker. I kept my camp speaker from my G1 (which most owners don’t seem to see much value in). It fits just fine, locks/unlocks as before and the on-screen image changes to show an image of the camp speaker when slid into place. No indication that the camp speaker is still charging when in place (heard that charging may not be enabled in G2 if camp speaker not purchased for delivery). In the camp speaker’s place my G2 came with the totally usable and well made drawer (I wasn’t sure if that was a Gear Shop option or standard on G2). The drawer is open at the top and the lock/unlock does not lock/unlock the drawer but the entire drawer assembly (so it can be removed and replaced with a camp speaker or other after market accessories, all of which seems like they should fit the same as in G1.
